I am now officially un-employed.

Thanks for the advice and moral support guys. I have 2 trades (industrial electrician and fitter) but i have a fair bit of welding and fabrication experience from my current job. I always like to keep my passion for working on, and modifying cars seperate to my job, as i feel it would take up too much time to be enjoyable anymore.

Should the 1 page be just a summary, with a CD/USB etc attached with more detail? do i still include the relavant trade/first aid/training certificates, or only mention, that they will be supplied if needed?

The reasons I would like to include a CD/usb, is i would like to a quick video of me, showing my hobbies and skills. Would this be a good idea?

I had considered coming back as a subbie (i even offered to stay on for a while to train up my replacement), but in the end of the day i'm happy i didnt as i never want to work for a company with a total disregard to health and safety again (I dont mean minor things either). If i was a subbie, they would have asked me to do even more dangerous and health damaging things, than i was already doing. The way i worded my proposal for redundancy, They could either say yes and let me go, or if they keep me on, and leave themselves open to a massive lawsuit if i was ever injured.

The good thing though, is i left on good terms with a payout. I was told to come back any time i like to visit. However, i dont know if this will still stand when i ask them for a letter saying i had been exposed to asbestos, extra fine sand, fine calcine dust, borax fumes, lime dust, potasium floride dust, and the many other chemicals in the air.

A covering page that states what you are applying for, where you saw it advertised or that you where told to apply by xx, stating that your CV (etc) is enclosed. Finish it off by saying that you would be happy to bring along all your certificates, a portfolio of photos or samples of your work to an interview.

Agree with slug_burner - the USB is a good idea but depends on the firm/agency. Most people want to make the short list fairly quickly and thus the one-two page is a better approach. You should definitely show ALL your tickets/skills/OHS knowledge etc - but you might want to make a larger portfolio (2-6 pages that you can also include should they like the look of you). The interview is where you can shine by discussing and showing evidence of what you have done. Depending on the job and if you have to answer selection criteria then you should be specific and give examples there and the USB might be appropriate. In my experience this is where people go wrong and are not selected. I would be happy to look over you draft (as would others i am sure) should you want some advice.

Have an electrical or mechanical trade - come to central QLD where there am a multitude of coal mines looking for qualified workers.

A couple of good 4wd locations too.

Remy is quite right. You are not trying to get a job with your resume! What you are trying to get is an interview. At the interview you can present your more extended information. The resume is part of the selecting out process that leaves the employer with a shortlist. What you are trying to achieve by sending in your resume is to get on that shortlist. That's all.

It's when you get to the interview that you are looking to get the job. That's when you make your pitch to employers that you are their man.

Keep the two things separate and you'll get it right. If you try to get the job with the resume you will give the wrong/ too much info. You need just enough to get to the interview - on to the shortlist.

Step 1 is getting an interview, Step 2 is getting the job from those who were interviewed.

If you are one of 500 who apply, they probably won't look at the video/usb. But if you have the skills they are looking for, you will likely get shortlisted/interviewed.

Do a one page summary of the important stuff, such as quals and experience. Add a note that more details are available on request.
Post it on Seek and every other site you can find.
Google Mine Jobs Australia and post it up there - you'll be surpised what is going for blokes with tradie skills.r
