Not only will this additional funding sustain Britain’s position as the world’s second biggest military spender, but it will also pay for two massive new aircraft carriers, the first of which was ordered today by the Ministry of Defence for the Royal Navy. Set to be named HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, the new aircraft carriers will greatly improve Britain’s ability to mount expeditionary warfare in foreign lands and seas. As Des Browne, the defence secretary, said:
Did anyone read in the Financial Review on Friday the article by a US defence analyst which proposed that US Aircraft carriers are now facing obsolescence due to new tactics being adopted by China and others.
Apparently a war game in 2002 had half of the US fleet sunk in the Arabian Gulf by cruise missiles and swarming suicide attacks by "Iranians".( until the Admiral in charge wouldn't accept the tactics and changed the rules)
His proposition was that Aircraft carriers were among several weapons
systems that had outlived their usefulness due to their vulnerablilty just as Battleships did in WW2.
