Contacted Kennards yesterday because I hadn't heard anything from them over the last 4 weeks, got a phonecall later in the day.
All the chippers (at Narre Warren) have now been overhauled by the manufacturer and self feed (as they should). The person I spoke to claimed this was organised before I complained in writing (?) but then mentioned that WorkSafe had visited so I guess it was more likeley following their visit.
Staff have been trained and are aware of how the chippers should work and hopefully now understand 'safe working practices'.
I also re-contacted WorkSafe but they will not provide details of their findings. At least they visited and for a short period the chippers may actually work properly !
Because Kennards are convenient (almost at the end of my street) I'm tempted to re-hire a chipper from them, maybe it will actually work this time. Better make my mind up quickly before they get used/abused and get back to the same condition as the last hire........

try this...
if it they hire it out and it doesnt work as it should and its a potential safety hazard (and I'd call a chipper that doesnt self feed or is provided with out the correct manual feeding attachments) a safety hazard call workplace to your site and have them inspect the machine on site.

My first question would be how long was it from when you cut the branches down until ytou went to put them through the chipper? The advice I receive is no more than 14 days for the smaller units that Kennards hire out as after that they become too dry and brittle.
Thew next issue is the type of timber you are trying to put through it. The Kennards units a generally designed to chip hardwoods such as Eucalypts etc.. If you are trying to put vines or softwoods through the machines they can jam and cause damage to the machine, which if picked up on return can cost you money.
In the end too you have to be realistic. Does your car ever have an issue even though you keep it well maintained? They are mechanical tools and will from time to time have an unforseen issue develop despite any best attempt to prevent it.
Yes but when you are paying good money for a product it should perform as advertised. Likewise the people renting the product are expected to know what is should capable of and not try to bull chit customers.Quote:

I agree completely, however breakdowns do occur from time to time, I would just expect that a replacement was made available or that a cheaper rate would be offered if it failed during the hire. I think that's fair.
