whats the difference between a shrimp and a prawn???
SIZE MATTERS,.....OK will explain, prawns are sized by count per pound, so how many prawns to make a pound. So the prawns in this thread are under 8, so less than 8 to a pound, the smallest we keep is 21/30, so between 21/30 prawns to the pound. There are some 40 count in some fisheries in Aust
Shrimp, as the Good OLD USA say are around 100 plus to the pound.Prawns this size will go thru our nets.
In saying that, any prawns sent to the USA are sold as shrimp for market reasons.I sure there is some scientific difference as to why they are so small, but thats it in a prawn shell so to speak
Cheers Ean
Or for the long answer:
Museum Victoria: What's the difference between a prawn and a shrimp?
From memory it has something to do with their legs and feeding arms and their internal physiology. I think the confusion arrises because the American's call everything a shrimp.
