What about the Isuzu designed and built Duramax V8?? The replacement for the 6.5.
The choice is probably the version 2 LLY or the higher output LBZ that GMC fit to Silverado HD and Kodiak HD.
These generally will bolt straight up to a 4L80E trannie for the 250BHP detuned engines, but IIRC, Allison autos are the std.
I know Greg at Brunswick bought a Duramax across with the view to putting it into an 80 Series Cruiser but had trouble fitting it under due to height. The ironic thing is that a 6.5 under the bonnet of an 80 Series sits waaaaaaay down inside, almost enough that you need abseiling gear when you lean over the bonnet to get to it!!!
If only Landrover put a bit more effort into "Project Alpine" we would all be driving V8 diesels.....
Now all someone has to do is work out how to strap another 3 cylinders to a TD5 and bend one across to the other side.....
Cheers
Andrew.
