    Disco 2 - V8 or td5?

Will use a fair bit in between carravanning trips but mindful of towing power:

V8: cheaper purchase, dearer fuel costs, cheaper servicing? 360nm torque.

Td5: dearer purchase, cheaper fuel, dearer servicing? 300nm torque.

I reckon over about 60,000 ks the fuel/purchase costs would more or less even out but would the V8 pull up those l-o-n-g hills better? Also, what used to bug me with our last petrol disco was the frequency of refuelling, so I thought if I got a Longranger fuel tank put in $1200? it would sort that problem out too. The caravan is around 2000kgs laden.

Differnce in purchase costs seems to be around low/mid $20,000s vs mid/high $20,000s. The other option is to go for a used TDV6 Disco 3 @ just under $40,000 and work a lot harder and tighten my belt.

....and that's not leaving out the possibility of a 2002 Rangie 3 or P38???????

    Any thoughts/advice?

btw, we're finally over the 130 'Fender (or the family are, more to the point)

I think the general consensus will be a chipped diesel.

Having said that, the ability of the V8 to maintain high rpms for sustained periods is one reason I'm looking at getting an old V8 D1 for towing.

I've had a petrol D1 and it was ok but was looking for a bit more grunt, particularly towing up those long hills. Is the D2 V8 a different motor? It would be a bit of a stretch going to a D3 but I could always give up on the beer and pies for a while and top up the piggy bank. That tdv6 looks an awesome bit of kit.

My choice of the two would be the Td5, but with a VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) fitted.

v8 for towing grunt, cheap and reliable,eg. recent purchase in Tas I know of........ 99 D1 93,000 klms, full service history, good reg and tyres, as new interior and paint......only 7k

...that saving will pay for a lot of fuel over a TD5, and should prove heaps more durable when the going gets tough

..prefect for towing the family horse float and 2000kg boat.

...don't go for the P38 unless you are prepared to spend heaps fixing it up

chipped td5 would be my choice for a d2, diesel usually deliver torque lower in the rev range and are better for towing but I have no experiance towing with a td5. like you said the d3 is very nice car but your servising costs and break down repairs would be more costly but bloody nice car and powerfull.

looks like a td5 or if the readies are flowing might look our for a tdv6. Might be the last trip in the old 130 coming up. The two boys are 6ft and still no sign of shrinkage, so time for a change. Had a 97 D1 before and it would struggle a bit with the current load so maybe a chip on a td5.

Gday, we have a TD5 D2 MY03 and tow a 2500kg Kedron caravan, when towing we cosistantly get 16.4 to 16.6 Lt's per 100. We have had this car since newbut i didnt start this data entry untill we had 40,000klm since i have punched in all the running costs into a program i have and it spits out all the usefull info, the only thing i dont put in is rego and insurance

OK here is what i have and should give an idea of the TD5 running cost:

    Average fuel Economy: 7.20 KLM/LTR
Most recent fuel Economy: 4.62 KLM/LTR
Average Fuel Cost: $1.38 per LTR
    Distance Travelled: 61,275 KLM
    Total Fuel Consumed: 6,726.80 LTR
    Total Fuel Expense: $9,370.26
    Total overall Expense: $17,504.92
Fuel Consumption Rate: 13.85 LTS per 100KLM
Cost of ownership: $28.60 per 100KLM

I hope this will give you an idea of the TD5 cost

    MarknDeb,

thanks for that info. I think I'm heading for a D2.

    Is your Disco chipped?

I take it you'd be towing around 90 kph?

    cheers
