Pretty impressive ... spotted near Geelong

    G'day guys,

Look what I spotted parked next to the freeway in Geelong (Waurn Ponds, to be exact)

Its a gas turbine destined for the Mortlake gas fired power station in western districts. It weighs 288 tonnes. The entire rig is 122 metres long, with three prime movers pulling and two pushing. Usually there's only two pulling with a third in reserve, but they had to use the third one last night coming up Ceres hill.

It a nice rig - all the gear in good nick ...

The thing is massive. Those of you who know me know that I am not a small bloke, but this towered way over my my head!

16 axles per trailer, one trailer front and one rear, 8 wheels per axle - that's 256 wheels - and all at 120 psi pressure. That's a fair bit of load carrying capability!

This is the gas turbine at 288 tonnes. In a couple of weeks the generator is coming thru at 318 tonnes. If I get pics of that I will post them too.

Its a Siemens gas turbine that was built in Germany.

Great photo's. I love those big equipment moving rigs. We get some big rigs through Alice sometimes with mining and oil rig equipment, but nothing as big as that yet.

Keep the phot's coming when you see the next big rig through town.

    Regards

The trailer alone must be worth a mint!

    Thanks, Willem.

In the weekend Age they had a notice of road closures due to heavy equipment moving through. That must be it. I too think those rigs are very impressive and interesting. I met an engineer in Canada who use to design those types of rigs. Thanks for the post.

I don't think it actually gets anywhere near that speed.

    Yep heard all about it.

We often transport large things (150t + drilling rigs) but nothing like this.

It apparently took a good 4 days to be transported....

    Really good stuff...

Yeah, prob not. Speaking of trucks, I was surprised how many trucks were going over 100kph on my way down from Sydney to Tassie with the folks (Chucaro) in the Defer. They were overtaking us and some were doing 120kph!

    According to your inaccurate speedo.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
