    China “Shanghai”

OK I’ve go a weekend in China “Shanghai” so what LR goodies or accessories would you bring back. If you know the name address that would be even better.

I dont think you are going to find any genuine Landrover stuff in China. Counterfeit copies yes but genuine parts unlikely. They dont recognise copyright or patents there so they only ever buy 1 of what they want and then copy it. I know a company that sold some loaders to China. Straight away they dismantled 1 and starting making identical parts. No more sales!

Shopping in mainland china is actullay not that good, all the good stuff (if you can call it that ) is exported and not available for local sale. You will find some bargains but as much as you might think.

If you have kids then theres a fantastic department store. Each level has an age group (i.e 0-1, 3-5 etc) and evrything for that age group is on that level.

I can have a look for the address if you want.

Non-LR, but there is quite a nice knife shop in the Nanjing Road mall (Nanjing Lu). Haven't been there in a couple of years, but you could get decent quality local brand kitchen knives, cleavers, etc
For about AUD $8 you could get some quite nice utility knives or miniature cleaver styles. Seem to hold an edge pretty well - especially for the price.
I dont recall the address, but from memory its not far from Pizza Hut !!

If you are into musical instruments, you might want to have a wander around the shops on Jing Ling Road (Jing Ling Lu locally).
Quality is variable, but if you already know how to pick a good instrument then you can find some half decent ones for cheap. I was over there with a mate that's a very experienced guitar player, and picked up a nice Epiphone Les Paul copy including plastic hard case for about AUD $340 (retail here at the time was around $1000 without the case). 3 years later after quite a bit of use its still holding up well.

Electronics wise I didn't find Shanghai to be that great. Lots of local brands, but not many western brands. Outside of the department stores the western branded stuff is likely to be either a knock-off, or factory seconds/failures. I got a couple of Sony flash drives and both turned out to be duds.
Hong Kong has a much larger range, and better prices/warranty.

Beer wise, I cant stomach the local Tsingtao beer, but I'm rather partial to the Tsingtao Export. Apparently the local version varies hugely in quality between breweries, but the export version is more controlled.

scott Oz - if you want cheap electronics, HK is the go. Head to Mong Kok and go nuts

In Singapore? probably nothing here is cheaper than in HK unless you want to buy some mantec stuff? Nam Seng Auto is the regional distro (incl. Oz I believe) but then again your luggage weight will come into question there.

When I was in HK in August I met a guy who was a bit of an electronics/inventor sort of geek (his words not mine).

He had just got back to the hotel after a visit to a particular street in Lai Chi Kok where they apparently had EVERYTHING electronic component wise. He looked like a country kid that had just visited the city lolly shop.

Didn't get a chance to go there (and I'm only a little bit electronic geeky), but I have the map he gave me at home if that sort of thing cranks your handle.

I found there was quite a range of prices in Mong Kok for the same item, so you need to know what things are worth and shop around. The shops all looked the same after an hour or so, so make sure you get a street map and something to make notes so you can get back to where you found the best bargain.
There were some well priced LED torches in the Mong Kok street market. I think the one the locals refer to as the "ladies market"
