The only thing Erich Von Daniken proved, is how gullible some people are. I was unaware that there were people around who still believed his ridiculous ideas.
If you are willing to read a very detailed debunking of the fanciful notions he espoused in "Chariots of the Gods?", have a look at Ronald Story's 1976 book, "The Space Gods Revealed".
Alternatively, you might consider these comments from reputable sources:
Most scientists and historians have rejected his ideas, claiming that the book's conclusions were based on faulty, pseudoscientific evidence, some of which was later demonstrated to be fraudulent and/or fabricated, and under illogical premises. For example, Ronald Story wrote a book rebutting Däniken's ideas in 1976 titled "The Space Gods Revealed" A similar internationally bestselling book, entitled "Crash go the Chariots" by Clifford Wilson, Ph.D., appeared in 1972.

Or this comment on the validity of some of his evidence:
Where is the proof for von Däniken's claims? Some of it was fraudulent. For example, he produced photographs of pottery that he claimed had been found in an archaeological dig. The pottery depicts flying saucers and was said to have been dated from Biblical times. However, investigators from Nova (the fine public-television science program) found the potter who had made the allegedly ancient pots. They confronted von Däniken with evidence of his fraud. His reply was that his deception was justified because some people would only believe if they saw proof ("The Case of the Ancient Astronauts," first aired 3/8/78, done in conjunction with BBC's Horizon and Peter Spry-Leverton)!

A further example of his technique of presenting pseudoscience as fact is his claim about the dimensions of Cheops' pyramid. He asks, "is it coincidence that the area of the base of the pyramid divided by twice its height gives the celebrated figure Pi = 3.14159?" (p. 77)
Such a claim is a nonsense. PI is a dimensionless constant. The area and the height of the pyramid are not dimensionless. Choose your units carefully, as Von Daniken did, and you can produce any number you like. If you measure in inches, feet, yards, metres or cubits, you get four different ratios.
That is typical of Von Daniken's technique of baffling with bulldust.
He also pulls the wool over some people's eyes with his frequent use of the "false dilemma" line of argument, saying such things as,
"Either this data is to be explained by assuming these primitive idiots did this themselves or we must accept the more plausible notion that they got help from extremely advanced peoples who must have come from other planets where such technologies as anti-gravity devices had been invented."
The man is a charlatan, his evidence is frequently fraudulent, his arguments are specious. I am relieved to hear that you apparently went to a school that had the good sense to ignore his discredited nonsense.
Edit: StephenF10 has put it much more succinctly, "It was crap".
