    intercooler - defender td5

    G'day guys

I have a question in about intercoolers with Tombie, and awaiting a reply... however... as there is stacks of info on here regarding the larger intercooler upgrade but not a great deal of info about where they came from!

if im going to chip the new defender i want a new intercooler... and get a good power remap done and also to help the poor thing breathe

so... where did you get them? td5 alive in the UK are quite cheap... but cant get info about postage at the moment!

    Thanks
    Steve

Here is the Defender TD5 Intercooler that Tombie help design

LAND ROVER DEFENDER TD5 REPLACEMENT INTERCOOLER
Our Discovery/Defender cores are designed to bolt up to the existing factory position making installation simple for any DIY handyman. ASE uses a core which is over twice as thick as the factory unit resulting in much more air flow potential and greater cooling of the charged air.
    $900 AUD

    AND you get it from

    thanks mate

How would you think that compare to say the TD5alive one from the UK? they claim they are 4 times bigger.. i know that one had a tombie influence so should be good...

found here Alive Tuning - Land Rover Performance Tuning - Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, TDi, TD4, TD5, TD6, TDV6, and TDV8

they (due to the dollar) are also pretty cheap at the moment at around $700. i also have family coming over soon... and may be able to bring it with them... or at least the hoses... and egr bypass (although i have one of these half fabbed!)

    Thanks

I got my silicon hoses from TD5Alive, but I got Tombies intercooler from ASEturbo in S.Aust, $900 + $40 postage, you'll find the postage the killer from the UK, it will probably be over 100GBPounds so unless you can get someone to bring it over, the price will be about the same.

I don't know anything about the TD5Alive intercoolers, I went with the Tombie one because I knew it would be good quality, it's been tested and known to work and it's made locally AND the aussie dollar was worth nothing then.

I assumed that it was a matter of just fitting it and it would just make more power, but it doesn't work that way, other things need to be changed to allow for the extra airflow that it produces, most of the pommie places do say that a chip upgrade is recommended if fitting the larger intercooler, some will only sell the intercooler with a chip upgrade.

With the chip, EGR bypass, silicon hoses and the wastgate turned 2 full turns, she's going great, so much better torque for towing, reduced EGTs and better fuel economy.

yup already have a mild tombie chip in the disco.. but for the defender we wanted to go a step further... hence i was looking at the intercooler also... so all up i would be going egr bypass, intercooler, chip, and probably a bit of an exhaust mod to spool up quicker..

depending on how big and delicate the intercooler is (and weight) depends on whether i can get the thing carried over... other thing is that i get it VAT free if i buy it and get it shipped.. if i get it delivered into the UK then i get stung an extra 15% (or 17.5% in January!)

Thanks for the info.. the tombie one is looking tempting... as i know it will be "proper"

    Thanks

One more thing, they are not an off the shelf item, well not when I ordered mine, so it will need to be made, it took about 3 to 4 weeks.
