Freeway terror as cruise control jams

How is this possible? 50 minutes stuck on cruise control? Surely this is some sort of joke...... (except it is from the ABC's "Breaking News" web page)

Freeway terror as cruise control jams

Posted 1 hour 19 minutes ago

A man has been taken to hospital in shock after the cruise control on his four-wheel drive jammed while he was on the freeway.

The 22-year-old was on his way to Greensborough, in Melbourne's north, and was about to exit the Eastern Freeway when he realised his vehicle was stuck in cruise control.

After he called triple 000 for help, police caught up with the frantic driver near Springvale Road and cleared a path for him.
At the same time the hapless driver was making every effort to stop the car, including braking, knocking it out of gear and trying to remove the keys from the ignition.

The four-wheel drive left the freeway at Frankston, went through the busy Cranbourne road intersection and onto the Mooraduc Highway, where the driver was forced onto the wrong side of the road to avoid banked up traffic.

He finally came to a halt when he used the hand brake, 50 minutes after his terror filled trip began.

I guess some-one will believe it, obviously it slipped through the ABC news editors

The brakes would not stop him but the handbrake did, he knocked it out of gear, the car kept going after the power supply was shut down........

    Cheers
    Mick

    From the courier snail:
Mr Weir eventually stopped the car on the wrong side of the road at 1.10pm, about 50 km after his panicked drive started, by jumping up and down on the foot brake and pulling the hand brake.
I suspect driver panic was the main problem here.

I agree. I suspect that either he is very inexperienced and panicked, wanted an excuse to get out of a speeding fine, has a grudge against ford.

    The options were:
    Switch engine off
    Take out of gear
    depress clutch (if manual)
put the t-case in neutral (is that possible with the exploder?)

And of course use the brake and handbrake

I am surprised the cops didn't put a car immediately in front of him to slow him down.

I find it very very hard to believe that the exploder managed to do 50kms on cruise with out breaking down......???

It does seem a bit odd that every safety system associated with the cruise control system failed at the same time. i dare say a 2002 expolder would have fly by wire throttle so a jammed c/control actuator sounds unlikely.
