the 200 has a nicer manifold and i think the only difference in HP is down to the fact that the 300 runs a bit higher boost. in aus we got the 200 late and it was quickly replaced by the 300 so in comparison there would be less 200s on the road than any other LR motor.

200, nicer to work on, just simpler but then we could say the same about the 2.25 etc etc
The P gasket is a non issue if fitted right, the vacuum pump is a non issue with a 50 cent piece of gasket paper and the head was redesigned in 2000 so they are no longer give trouble if the cooling system is maintained and the timing belt was redone in 1999 with flanged gears and are fine if correctly fitted. The injectors are $143 each so who cares if you can't service them. While that seems cheap compared to a $1000+ unit injector, I can buy 4 (genuine) nozzles for either my 2.25D or 4BD1 for about that price.

How often do they need changing?,bugger all if ever.I changed mine because they had done 400K and are cheap,it's nothing worth worrying about. Pat

It's the gasket that is between the alloy water pump, alternator, fan hub etc casing and the block. If you use cadnium bolts with anti-sieze and ultra blue on the gasket and do all the bolts up tight and even, the even bit is important they don't give trouble. There is an updated crush gasket but you still need the ultra blue. for you and me the P gasket is not a problem, unless the original is had survived over 200 000 klm then the bolts you will not be able to get out and probably the alloy housing will be distorted. say 500 bucks for some one who don’t know.

vacuum pump same again for you and me, no problem but pay for the job 300 bucks plus labor.

timeing belt is a non issue. But the serpentine belt squeak squeak. Idler gear bearing or rubber bush. Another 300 bucks. If you pay some one to do it

Now im not Knocking the TDI 300 i quite like the donk. but a 200 is better.

Pgasket. on the front of the block there is an alloy casting bolted on. The P gasket ( because it looks like a P) stops the water leaking out between the block and this alloy casting.

When I had a 200Tdi everyone told me it was **** and the 300Tdi was far better. Now I've got a 300Tdi and everyone tells me the 200Tdi is better.

That's bound to have started an argument. I know a good engine even if it doesnt have a LR badge.
