Well I just bought a box of the dreaded R2 E2s from a farmers market.
The guy swore that they have changed and lost the kerosene taste that I always hate and let us sample some. He reckened they are now the best , but maybe as a NSWelshman doesn't know his mangoes
They seem OK but I will wrap em round his head if they turn out to be kero. AT $10 for 12 jumbos they are sure cheap., and they had Bowens for 12 for $12. I will report further after trying one.

Love mangoes, in Malawi we saw them growing wild so stopped the truck and gorged ourselves .:)
well, I had an R2E2 last night and it was good.
Different to a Kensington with firmer flesh and not as much juice. Not as sweet around the bone .
But overall a good mango with no kero taste. I wonder what they did to fix it? Must have been something in the soil or maybe young trees had the taste but older ones don't.
BUt its really too late as most people like me will not touch them.
Regards Philip A
Yes the old turpentine ( common ) mango can be a bit "iffy " in taste.Place ( private) I know in Yeppoon (CQ ) has 28 different varieties growing. So the list for the best is great but the good old "Bowen" takes some beating.

We have 2 Bowen Mango trees growing and usually get a good crop - in Feb/March down here.
A few years ago, we planted a couple of seeds from some mangoes we got in Gove. They are a completely different type, the locals called them Strawberry Mangoes. They are slightly smaller than a Bowen and longer in shape, the skin is a reddish orange colour when ripe. They don't seem to be as sweet as the Bowen, but they are still very nice.
grew up with 3 trees in the yard and loved them till one day i reached my quota and the supreme being in his infinite wisdom decided i should be afflicted with boils everytime i have one....
a wiess bar is as close as i am game to get these days....
always washed my face etc etc etc so it wasnt that.
something about them cleaning the blood my old nan used to go on about..
and i got the boils on the top of my legs and on the back of my neck, never on my face :p
