The Butterworth over pressure valve, was invented by one Bertrum E Butterworth of Madison,Wisconsin,USA in 1923,the third son of Elmer and Sheila Butterworth who emigrated to the US when there house in Scarborough,North Yorkshire slid into the sea on the night of Wednesday the 3rd of November in 1896 at approx 3.15 am,loosing everything this time, Elmer had already slid down the same cliff face some weeks earlier loosing his left shoe in that incident.
waking Shelia who was still a sleep in bed as it floated in the North Sea telling her not to look for her slippers but to swim with him to the post office for two tickets to America on the next passage steamer out of Whitby, loosing his right shoe as well as all his atlas and Sheilas Brother knitting machine was the last straw, they left for the US on the SS Luckless the next Tuesday after stopping with Mr and Mrs Trotter of 3,The Elms, North Bay, Scarborough.
