Bit has fallen off? Do I need it?

    Hi
I was crawling around under the Discovery checking for leaks etc. and discovered that there appears to be a plug, simular to a sump plug missing from the torque converter housing?

Wondering was it ever there, has it fallen off, more importanly do I need it?

    Thanks Andrew

It's the bell housing plug. Not needed.

I'm not familiar with the autos, but Land Rovers usually have wading plugs in the gearbox bell housings and timing cover of 300Tdi's.

The idea is the hole is open so leaking oil can drain out, but the wading plug is fitted when you will do a trip with deep water crossings.

yeah like what he said but you do not leave them in just apply them when doing a crossing then remove

leave them in and take them out as part of your routine servicing, that way you dont forget to take them with you when you go offroading and get caught having to unexpectedly ford.

    missing plug

I would replace the plug and leave it in.
I had repair my starter motor after being stuck in mud and water. This could also cause problems with other stuff like clutch bearing and ever seals.
What I reacon to do it remove the plug every time you grease the shaft and do your oils.
The thing is that people don't think of fitting the plug when they need it.
And about bits falling off if anyone tightind up stuff like the book says when you service it, it wouldn't happern.

What sort of damage would happen if you did a short deep crossing without the plug fitted?

Is the plug the same in the later D1's?

    missing wading

On the series 2a 1969 it had a bracket so you could undo the plug and store it by screwing it into the bracket.
The plug might not have been been supplied at all or it could have been in the original tool kit.
I had a disco 1 and in the book it said to order it from the dealer if you wanted it .
Don't know if it the same plaug but a place like enzed should be able to supply you one.
I have done a started repair on by disco and the 2a from water dammage.
the water gets in and you don't think of it till you go to drive the car next. The thing is that most people didn't plan on getting stuck or they would be prepared, so I say leave the plug in just incase.
