How far can you get out of Istanbul ?, lots of places to visit - Izmir, Pamukkale, Dalian, Ephesus, Troy, Olu Deniz, Ankara . Turkey has a great coach network and is really easy to get around, you will most like go to Izmir on the way to Galipoli .In Istanbul there is Topkapi Palace, the blue mosque and the Aya sofia mosque is a sight to behold.

Turkey is a great place and EFES Pilsen - the local drop is a great beer and cheap as well. Anywhere on the coast on the Asian side of Turkey is fantastic. Just down from Madavagat is really special.
I found that Turks liked Aussies and were very friendly people. You will have a ball.
Gallipoli is a very solemn place - makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You keep saying to yourself - "What a Waste".
Enjoy the trip

G'Day,
Aya Sophia is not a mosque, first its correct name is Hagia Sophia or "Holy Wisdom" in Greek
The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian
In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II, and the church was converted into a mosque
It remained a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.
As for the possibilities of sight seeing, they are numerous, I have listed some filtered by region:

Istanbul, Bursa, Iznik (Nicaea), Troy, Abydos, Alexandria Troas, …
2-Aegean:
Ephesus, Bodrum (Halicarnassus), Kusadasi, Izmir, Aphrodisias, Marmaris, Datca, Cnidos, Caunos, Nyssa, Assos, Pergamum, Pamukkale (Hierapolis), Colossae, Priene, Miletus, Didyma, Magnesia, Sardis, Teos, Aizanoi, Pygale, Interactive Map,…
3-Mediterranean:
Antalya, Kas, Kalkan, Aperlai, Isinda, Olympos, Chimaera, Phaselis, Kekova, Simena, Patara, Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos, Cilicia, Pamphylia, Termessos, Selge, Perge, Aspendos, Side, Alanya, Demre, Sagalassos, Fethiye, Hatay, Interactive Map, …
4-Black Sea:
Sinop, Trabzon, Amasya, Safranbolu and Traditional Turkish Houses,…
5-Central Anatolia:
Cappadocia, Konya, Catalhoyuk, Gordion (Gordium), Hattusas, Interactive Map,…
6-Eastern Anatolia:

7-Southeast Anatolia:
Nemrut Dag (Mount Nemrut), Commagene, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Gobeklitepe, Zeugma, Hasankeyf, ...
I don't recommend Ankara because it doesn't offer a major inetrest also I don't recommend venturing in the Eastern and Southeast Anatolia for security reasons.
