    Window tinting and rust protection

Looking to get my Defender 110 windows tinted to try and beat the heat for the kids in the back.

Anyone able to recommend a reputable window tinting company on Brisbane (preferably northside)?

I've had a quote for for $445 with 61% heat reduction or $545 with 81% heat reduction. Lifetime warranty.

This seems expensive to me - is this a decent price or can I do better?

Also, should I consider rust protection (not electronic)? If it's worth it, I'd probably be smart to get it down by the same place (I think the tint places sometimes do it).

    Again, any recommendations?

I would be somewhat dubious about the claims for 61% and 81% heat reduction. I think you'll find perhaps it's supposed to be UV ray reduction......if I could get 81% heat reduction with a simple window tint I'd take the climate control out of mine and throw it away, no doubt a lot of others would also

Sorry, can't comment on the Brisbane prices though.

    Cheers
    Mick

I got my 110 tinted for $300 by a guy over here who advertises in the quokka (equivalent of the trading post). He did a good job and uses good quality film (which is the main thing. as the warranty is given by the film manufacturer, not the installer). There was no difference in price between 35% 20% 10% and 5% film (% values are percent light transmission).

I suspect the numbers they are giving you are the addition of reflected and absorbed solar radiation from spec tables like these:
    http://www.sungard.com.au/sites/defa...0datasheet.pdf

Note that any film which lets less than 35% of light through is not legal - though note most manufacturers only make 35% and darker

As for rustproofing - buy a small compressor, a tarp, a degreasing gun, and a tin of fishoil or lanolin (lanotec). You will do a batter job for less money than any commercial place.

Anything over about $350 would be over priced.

I imagine the heat reduction stated is an industry term only, and obviously not how much it would cool the car down. Also, all tinting they supply is 99.9% UV resistant.

In regards to rust protection, Read the warranty fineprint carefully and don't let anyone do the job unless you can watch the process. When that window tinter / rustproofer/ accessory fitter / whatever else has more on his plate than he can handle but the car, maybe not yours but the one after it, must be ready on time, corners will be cut.
I spent over 16 years in a dealerships pre delivery section and saw it too many times both in house and for work contracted out.
    Cheers,
    Anthony.

If there are a few people that want tinting done, I have a friend @ Wicked Window's, he has quoted me $200 for a Defender dual cab, $250 for the Disco, he is mobile, and the more vehicle's he can do in the one spot on the same day, the cheaper they get!....... I have used Tech-Tint in Wynnum, he charged me $395 for a Liberty sedan, Brad @ Wicked is the go, you can reach him on 0423 095 119, hope this helps
