The last merkin factory which was located behind Marks and Spencers in Inkerman St.,Ramsbottom Lancs.

There were three different grades when I was taken round by the senior merkin maker a Mr Cecil Clapper(65), who knew more about merkins than the merkin hair growers them selves,he told me that the best kept growers lived on a council estate near Bolton(location still kept secret)the houses were bought by the company(T.C.Muff and Sons Ltd) for it's best growers.

The rougher growers were bought in by bus from as far afield as Accrington, these had to use the service shoot entrance so as not to lower the tone of the company,the mid range which were called 'tulips' these were sold by mail order only and the rough ones were 'buyer collects' only the top grade merkins would be fitted on site or T C Muff had a 'serve you at home service' (costs for this service varied as to how far the customer lived from the factory and how much petrol was used).the van was a nearly new Bedford CA with column change in dark blue with gold leaf sign writing.
