    i agree!
i believe some people need to start to take some responsibility for tidying up rubbish and there behaviour because then they wonder why places get closed off and good things come to an end and not only applying to 4wd situations but most lesure activities eg:fishing was always taken for granted and the few people who just abused the privledge by taking way more than they needed have brought upon us the restrictions and regulations we have today and they are the first to say WHY.......

after most bush and/or beach trips i end up finding myself with more rubbish than i started off with
another thing i noticed on australia day on stockton beach was the amount of out of towners and there "status 4wds" as some off you's have already mentioned.2 scenarios pop to mind 1st was a mid age man in a brand new 200series toyomota coming towards us on the anna bay enterance i made the comment "i bet this fella is here to impress everyone by doing wonders" after about 10 mins at anna bay getting some items from the shop we headed back onto the beach to find a rather lrage lineup of vehicles and to my amazement there was a brand new 200series about 50m past where i last seen him here he is giving it some herbs and still getting no where (rock hard tyres) the rangers were even having a laugh watching him as little 4wds puttered past and 2nd for the day was a subaru impreza or something along those lines trying to see how far they could go along the entrance and what do you know they were bogged to the foolboards right in the middle of the enterance i just thought COME ON PEOPLE i aint the best driver on the beach but even my dog could see these obvious things

and ausfree if i was you , you should gladly take cal415's offer of taking you for a drive. i have been on a few outings now with him and the other day he jumped in with me and gave me a few pointers and all i can say is wow thanks mick need a full day some time

also does anyone know who owns a red county called charlie? (was at stockton on aust day)

I've lived at the Anna Bay end of Stocko' for the last 25-26yrs. The rubbish has always been an issue ... generally visitors are the problem ... too lazy to take their rubbish with them ... and that's only what you can see ... ALOT gets buried ... out of sight, out of mind. .... then there's all the crap that washes ashore ... but that's all on the beach, not in or behind the frontal dune.

I was down there day before Aust' day with my 9 year old. We sat ontop of the frontal dune in the D2 and watched the southerly blow in late in the arvo ... the beach was packed with campers & tents & fourby's ... and within 20min's there was a mass exodus off the beach (what the matter, a little wind and rain's a problem ??). After an hour the beach looked deserted ! There was tarps & shelters & tents and all sorts of things flying around in the wind ... quiet amusing to watch the mad scramble of folks trying to save their gear !

The next day we're down the beach again (Mr 9 is becoming a 4WD enthusiast ! )

The frontal dune was littered with broken chairs, crushed and twisted ally frames off free standing pergola's, torn tarps, shredded tents, drums, boxes & bottles & cans galor, and numerous items of camping and shelter equipment which had been shredded and destroyed when the previous days southerly buster hit .... quicker and easier to leave it and run.

Mr 9 starts digging a sandpit hole in the frontal dune ... so I take the D2 and drive around and form up a short circuit for Mr 9 to practice his sand driving skills on ... after running the circuit 7 or 8 times I went back to get him ... holy crap!! ... he's excavated tyres, bike wheels, plastic toys, bottles & cans, rope, poly tarps, and all manner of cast-off rubbish .... the long term campers have a nasty habit of burying all their rubbish rather than taking it off the beach when they leave.

Cal, when you take the run down Stocko with Ausfree, give me a holler, and if I'm free I'll tag along ... and say Hi ! I've never actually entered Stocko' via Lavis Lane ... always go on from the home end, so it's be nice to check out the "other" mexican end of the beach with someone who knows it well.

    Cheers
    Kev..

The drive on Stockton Beach could be a while yet from me. As some of you know I am having mechanical problems with my Freelander, Coolant in the Auto Tranny courtesy of a cracked Tranny cooler. The mechanic put every thing back together, started the motor, it ran great for thirty seconds then stalled with a heap of error codes. Had a mechanic from All 4X4 at Kotara have a look, couldn't help, so the vehicle has to go to All4X4 at Kotara to hook up to their diagnostics, I shudder at the final bill.

Car has been off the road for almost a month now. If it wasn't for my boss lending me a work car we would be in real strife as far as transport is concerned.

When we were still living on Bribie Island, almost on the beach, we were going there regularly (about at least once a day, that is), and despite garbage bins being provided by the council, we found rubbish thrown or left everywhere. So we made it a habit to take with us a carrier bag each and first left when it was filled, ready to be dumped in one of the bins. It usually didn't take very long, though. Whenever we drove onto the beach, we filled the rear of the 109 before returning with as much scrap as possible, to subsequently dump it correctly. It is a shame that many visitors behave that careless, not only is it disgraceful from an environmentally point of view, it even can be hazardous, as some items, such as broken bottles or open cans, not to mention thrown away fishing line and hooks, can inflict serious injuries.
Sometimes we were lucky and even found something of (even somewhat limited) value, such as a sixpack of XXXX . But the best part was the enjoyment of having achieved something, namely leaving the place a wee bit better than we initially found it. Hope someone there continues the work in our absence...
