I went to P-H-U-Ket a couple years ago with a some friends.
we stayed at Patong Beach, which was ideal!
We wanted a good, cheap holiday and it was cheaper to go there than stay in Australia!
The whole town is tourist central though and probably just as focused, if not more so, on nightlife than daytime activities. But again, as 20year olds that suited us fine

Can still do all the other touristy things, we did a trip out to Phi Phi Island, with snorkelling, which was a good day out. All the markets and shopping is fairly textbook with dvd's, clothes etc...There are activities on the beach as well, like jet skiing and paragliding, possibly kayaking and what not as well.

The location is pretty good, it's sort of banked either side by mountains, so it's fairly sheltered and you can walk around most of the town pretty easily. Myself and a mate hired scooters for a few days and did a ride up one of the mountain roads and got some awesome views out to see! even just riding a scooter around is an experience in itself

    Mate

Lived there for 3 years but in the NE
Comes down to what you really want to do, how active you want to be etc

p h u k e t and PATIYA are just old US Vietnam R&R beaches and even today this history is still evident but its not Thailand. My pick would be Kanchanaburi. ( bridge over the river Quai) have a look at the real bridge, plenty of restrants on or next to the river, take a boat on the river, the grave yards are a bit of an eye opener. There are some hills there and are the elephants, a couple of nice resorts, its only a couple of hours out of BBK, or 250 - 400 AUD if you take an airport taxi.

Kanchanaburi is touristy a bit but not over the top like south.

The heat in summer is dry, and in winter it can drop to +5 at night

There is only one real rule for Thailand, always smile, SMILE any sign if anger is just Very rude, service will disappear.

Oh and if you standing at the urinal with your hands full. and some guy comes up behind and starts to massage your shoulders, don’t worry just relax ( it helps) and tip him on the way out LOL

    Consider Vietnam as well.

We've been to Thailand a few times... Koh Samui etc and up to Chiang Mai ...nice enough but we found Vietnam a similar but much better experience overall ...excellent food without the very hot chilli of Thailand, hassle free not so many hawkers, great people, and the beach resorts are just as good if that's what you're after.

We used these people, splashed out a bit more for a personal tour and had our own car, driver and guide the whole time, but still ridiculously inexpensive. They were very good.

And even more so Laos - IMHO the jewel of SE Asia, particularly Luang Prubang. Not often do you find a whole city classed as a UNESCO World Heritage area!

We'd be looking at staying in a resort.......not too expensive, but not cheap and nasty either. It will just be my wife and me.
We're interested in anything from relaxing by a pool, to climbing a mountain, sea kayaking etc etc, so we're open to any suggestions.

    Murray,

If you're looking at staying at or close to Patong Beach, there are two "Merlin" resorts there - both good value. The Merlin Patong Beach is right in town, close to the markets & main town beach, pretty handy to everything, but in a very busy area. If you would like a little more peace & quiet, the Merlin Beach Resort is only about 5 km out of Patong Beach, has its own private beach etc, and is the nicer of the two resorts. Travel between the resort & town isn't a problem - free buses regularly between the two Merlin resorts and no shortage of various other means of transport.

We recently spent 10 days at the Merlin Beach - would recommend it to anyone,
    Cheers .........

I have spent many a time in Asia, and Thailand is a lovely place, i think its got something for everyone, depending on what type of holiday you are after, i would not put ****et on my list of place to go however, as for me its alittle over croweded, but saying that if its your first time then it will give you a taste of the place. Better place would be Ko Chang, its like Samui 30 years ago alot less built up and offers alittle more charm. As for a stop over in Bangkok i think thats a must some people hate the place, but i love it so many different things to do and see,and well worth a few days or more if you have the time....

Thanks for all the replies. There's a lot for us to think about, but we've given ourselves plenty of time to organise things.
A fellow member of LROCV told me there is a place near Chiang Mai where they take you driving in Land Rovers. We'll keep it in mind, but I prefer being behind the wheel.
