Hi Simon and like everybody else, sorry for your lose.
I went through the same thing just 3 months ago, and my mate was about the same age as your so I know exactly how you heel.
Simon
Just wanted to offer my heart felt sympathies on losing your best friend, your dog Simba. The loss of a close pet, especially a dog, is sometimes harder than any other loss as there is an inherent trust and love a dog gives you that you cant get from anywhere else. My heart feels for you as I have been there and I hope yours is full of good memories. May she rest in peace.

My sympathy on your loss

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Gees Simon; the pain and feelings you must be experiencing at the moment. Your recount of the summer holidays and the final days speaks to your character and the bond you had with Simba.

Simon sorry to hear you have lost your best friend......:(
I thought I had lost mine too as I came home from work tonight and they were GONE!!:(
Sorry to hear of your loss Simon,
Not looking forward to losing our "Max" who is moving a little slower these days.
Our thoughts are with you Simon.
I am glad you were with her at the end. I dread the days my 2 pass and can only hope it is as peaceful and in as loving company as Simba's.
I could throttle Barry for making me read your post. It bought back so many memories from when my first pup passed. We grew up together. She died suddenly about 20 years ago now, but I still remember and miss her.
Big hugs.
