the only way to know if the seal is leaking.......is by being there when the gearbox is removed.....
they can show you the seal in situ.......before they attempt to remove it.....
you cannot remove the seal without damaging it......and if the person who removed the seal damaged the surface the seal
runs on....it will leak......its easy to damage if you are not careful.......
Ok, So I have now seen the seal, and cannot see anything wrong with it, they have replaced it (and I do 'trust' them) and it all seems fine. so what now, I can take the seal back to the supplier but I'm sure they are not going to give me $500 back for labor and the new seal?
Do I have a leg to stand on when I take the part back to the supplier?
not after 6 months I wouldn't of thought mate....

This is why you don't supply your own parts when a workshop is doing the work.
I believe Land Rover original rear engine oil seals are designed with a 50:50 chance of leaking.
Sent my 94 Disco TDI in to have a new gearbox installed and, since engine was leaking, asked for a new oil seal.
When mechanic called to say job was done, went over and all looked well. He then started up the motor, took me for a drive around the block, and when we got back, it was gushing oil.
He showed me the ori box the seal came in.
Not much to gain from screaming, so he just ordered another and replaced it. (He did not charge me for first oil seal, nor extra labour, since I left it all to him. Wouldn't blame him if he decides to charge more for LR oil seal changes in future, or maybe he has already factored it into his quotes.)
Then he showed me the first "new" oil seal, and compared it with one from a Japanese brand which cannot be mentioned, and is now synonymous with recall.
The LR one has a rubber ring installed in a beautifully cast alloy surround.
The "other" one has an ordinary looking metal surround but the rubber seal has a metal spring embedded all around. That makes all the difference.
My second oil seal did the trick, for all of 2 weeks. Now, I just let it leak and just check the dip stick every week.
