    Rear engine seal

how bad is this - lesson learned....

Bought the clutch kit and fly wheel in order to save some $$. Had them installed and since then the td5 was leaking oil. Took it back and it was the rear engine oil seal (or something like that) they had to pull out the gearbox and all.

Now, because I supplied the parts they are charging me for labour and all parts to fix.

    bugger...

Worth having a go though, and did pretty well to get most of it together.
Think of any extra cost as a paid lesson, and now you'll be much better at it with no ill consequences.

does the rear seal some times have defects in and even though they are fitted correctly they still leak, or is it that it was installed incorrectly or even pinched. If it was pinched whiles installed I should not have to pay for the labour... If the part was faulty I'm happy to pay the labour as I supplied the parts, else if the machanic stuffed up they should pay. Suppose they will never accept responsibility.... such is life

AFAIR the rear main seal is not part of a clutch kit.

However you should always replace it when you have the engine and transmission apart as , as you have found, it is a big job to do it.

Changing a clutch and flywheel should not affect the rear main seal, however the rattle gunning of the flywheel bolts may have sent an old seal over the edge.
I am surprised the mechanic did not recommend you change it when the thing was apart, however it is your responsibility to ask for it.

Unless of course you supplied it and they fitted it. This is not clear from your post.

Could almost guarantee they damaged it on installation.

It'll be ruined during removal, so you wont be able to prove it though.

hang on, yes I did supply the rear main engine seal (think that is what it was called) but when they installed it they called me and said they need to pull it appart as it was leaking in the rear seal, so actually the one that was leaking was they one they pinched or replaces....

now they want me to come in and see for my self before the remove it, thought that was a good idea, but how will I know if it was damaged. I should be able to see the one side but not the other so why bother. Suppose it's no use getting into an argument I cannot win, I'll just pay and make my point.... LOL

I am afraid I am having trouble understanding what happened.

If you supplied them with a seal that was either incorrect size or poor quality, the mechanic should have told you that and refused to fit it. This of course depends on what the discuission was at the start. Did they tell you this or warn you or say that they took no responsibility? Did you ask their opinion?

If it was a known brand seal of good quality and they agreed to fit it, and damaged it on installation then they should pay at least the labour.

Without knowing your specific contract with the mechanic it is impossible to know who is right and who is wrong. If you feel strongly about it and they are MTIA members complain to MTIA or your state Fair trading.

I do not know why they want you to see the seal as the business end is facing in. Maybe to prove it is leaking.LOL . Of course they may have to destroy it to get it out.
    Regards Philip A
