My car motorcycle and home contents are with Shannons.
I have not had an infringement but I had a total loss when I destroyed the Defender on the beach hitting a rock. I had been with my insurer for 14 years without a claim and maybe a speeding ticket or two and they paid out my claim and allowed me to buy the wreck so no complaints. I rebuilt the car and went back to them. I got told to take a hike and take my business elsewhere.:( Famous Car Insurance brokers. I like them, they don't like me.
I called Shannons and declared all the embarrassing facts about writing off a car and being refused insurance etc and they took me on. Lower premiums too.
Never had a claim since so really I don't know how good they are. Tell you what though I'm paranoid though. I take my Defender on my outback holidays because that's what it's for but I haven't been on any mudplugging trips with fellow AULROs because I think subconsciously it's not worth the risk.

We are with GIO.
Tried shannons but they claimed they don't insure 4wd's only enthusiast's cars, That was 5 years ago.

I have been with AAMI since I bought my D1 in July 2006. They did it for market value $8200 and charged me like $1100ish. Fair enough.
The next year, renewal is about the same money, D1 apparently worth $9300!
In October 2007, I connected with a wayard beef on the road in a storm at 80kph.
Eventually, they decide to write it off, I take the $9300 minus $1200 excess (male under 24) minus $1500 salvage.
The cheque for $6600 more than pays for me to repair all the damage myself, Blueslip, Greenslip, Rego etc.
AAMI won't rego it comprehensive again until they inspect the repairs I've done, and can value it in person. But, if it was just a standard D1 (bullbar, towbar) they reckon its only worth $4000, and want to charge me $1000 to insure it!
What value/premium ratio do you draw the line at? Insuring a vehicle when the premium is a quarter of its value, and the excess is another quarter?

I got a price from NRMA and one other that were very similar, then got a price from youi that was almost exactly half. The policy had many options so I dropped the free hire car and a few other things and the price came down.

I just got slapped by Suncorp with an additional claim excess of $450 on top of the 40yo driver $500 excess because i put tough dog 9 stage adjustable shocks in and upgrade the chip. and they charge me 1200 bucks a year for the D2
They basically said sod off when i complained
No claim ever (im 40) no speeding tickets since 1987, and that was all one of them.
Im watching this thread with interest cause Ill take the D2, the Pathy (which is currently more modified than the D2), the house and contents and tell Suncorp to shove up their excess ;)

Years ago I used to use a broker for my insurance, I discovered one day that I could get significantly cheaper premiums with the same insurance company by going directly.
For the next 15 years I have done the research every couple of years and made my own choices.
Last year I thought I would try a broker again. I now have 4 vehicles registered in my name plus my wifes car. The broker insured with the same companies I was with any way and it was no cheaper. This year all my renewals have gone up by about %20, so I am reading this thread with interest and seiously considering going back to looking and choosing my self.

My D1 is through Affinity Insurance. They advertise in LROCV magazine, and you get discounts for being member of a 4WD club, and having done basic 4WD training.
Its insured for about $13K, $450 excess, and premium around the $400 mark. Think they charge less if you do under 10,000k's a year.
I'm in my 40's with no accidents or infringements.
Was with AAMI, but they would only insure it for $7K, and about same premium.
I had to list the accessories/mods currently on it when I first applied, but don't need to notify them of any changes (obviously has to be still legal), unless it takes the vehicle value over the amount they have insured for.
