    Discovery off road towing

I read in a book by Pat Callinan that the Discovery is limited to towing 1 tonne off road? Is this correct and what is the limit for a Defender?

    Wellcome aboard.
    I would say BOLLOCKS.
That would be the Landrover "Reccomended" weight.
As long as the trailer is braked you wont have any problems with a Disco or Deefer.Electric brakes are more controlable off-road as you can brake the trailer and not the tow vehicle. The shunting effect of overide brakes on ANY tow vehicle is very dangerous off-road.
Ive regularly towed 2 tonne plus loads of firewood on an unbraked trailer in off-road conditions,D2 handled it easy, stopping was an issue on dirt with ABS.I built a braked off-road trailer and still pulled the same weight load with ease and was able to stop safely.

Have watched PC on a couple of his "advertorial" shows. The bloke has a great time, and good on him! but he's a travelling bill board for whomever is sponsoring him at the time... the shows are a sting of product placements interspersed with ad breaks!!!

    Discovery off road towing

Thanks LandyAndy, what I thought too but wanted to check. I intend doing the Cape York run in twelve months with my son, but haven't decided on a vehicle yet. My son has a Country and I fancy a Defender but think a Disco may be more comfortable in my old age.

    Let me clarify...

ALL Oz 4wds are limited a lot more offroad to their manufacturers tow weight.

1 tonne is correct, braked or not...

Crash offroad towing more than 1 tonne and you potentially can have your insurance denied...

However, landrovers dont struggle to tow reasonable weights offroad.
But to the letter of the law, its not legal...

Neither is it in a Cruiser or Patrol.

Just talking about how limited legal off road towing is and gives an example of the Disco just being limited to 1 tonne. As previously pointed out by Hoges he's all about "advertorials" and advertising so presumably he has an arrangement with Nissan so he's not going to put them into a possibly bad light.

I've never heard of a legal limit on off-road tow weights. Where did you see that?

the legal limit for off road is as specified by the manufacturer, at least thats as far as your insurance agents cares.

I suggest sticking with them if you are doing all the good tracks on the cape. but then I have a pretty hard definition of off road.

as far as I care if I can see it on a map, its road and you tow what you can. If your towing something stupid heavy and you get laughed at, well that just comes with the ground.

also IMHO if theres 3 or less of you and you have a landrover with a designed wheel base over 95 inches you shouldnt need a trailer for a self sufficient week long trip. Theres very few places where you will be less than a week from a resupply point.

as far as I know off road applies to any non-gazzetted road ie, anything not on a road map.
