Back then they would have had no choice. Don't forget it would have been todays old codgers that developed the early computers so todays milling machines have something to be guided by.

I made the 1 millionth AULRO post
Cad model from any 3d cad systems, then postprocessed into something like Delcam (probably heavily customised to suit machine)
let the software deal with it and then watch the machining preview (animated in software) then wear adult size nappy while watching it being machined
yes been there done that... many years ago...
The technology isnt new.. i saw a 1 peice turbine being made a good 8-10 years ago... i saw a working 6 Degrees of freedom hexapod working at the same time and also something know as Ultra high speed machining demonstrated. which works on the basis that after a certain rpm and feed speed the power required for cutting metal decreases. so watching a high speed steel tool spin at 100000rpm plus and slam itself into an aluminium block was quite impressive!
Thanks
Steve
Normal sort of stuff for a modern CNC machine shop. Pretty well all the CNC machine tool manufacturers do similar demonstrations. I watched one making a glass moulding die for a traditional Coca Cola bottle at a trade exhibition a few years ago. Bloody amazing.
Same show had a high speed CNC lathe at work using ceramic tools. Turning 100mm stainless hollow bar down to 60mm in two cuts, 15mm roughing cut and 5mm finishing cut, 500 rpm and feed rate flat out. Finish like glass both cuts, then cut a coarse thread in one cut flat out.
I think Haas are still the leaders in this field. Made in California. Wonderful machines. I saw a DVD of a 300 horsepower 5 axis Haas hopping into a block of heat treated 7140 die steel. Cutter diameter was 24" holding 60 inserts. Initial cut was 3/4" depth on a block 20" wide. Smoking hot chips were coming off like rain faster than the disposal system could handle. They had a worker standing alongside with a broom to keep clearing chips off the table. Ther was a pile of blue smoking chips on the floor.
