    My new workbench!

Well Im very pleased with myself at the moment. I just finished my new workbench and it looks sweet!

I had some old hammerlock benches around (that actually used to be our kitchen for a while when we were renovating) that I got from bunnings so I decided to build a better bench top across the top fo the three of them. The hammerlocks are very simple but very sturdy so I thought they would be a good base.

So I wanted a surface that would be tough and durable and take a hammering (literally) and when I saw redgum sleepers (200x50x2400mm) on sale at Bunnings I thought beauty! So after a trip to bunnings and about $200 bucks later I was on my way home with 5 sleeps, tons of bolds and nut, a routing bit and a new power saw. I even borrowed one of bunnings free trailers as I dont have my own yet...

The bench is 3.5m long so I overlapped the sleepers to anchor the benches together. I then drilled recessed for the heads of the bolt which were domed M12 bolts and then drilled the shank holes through the sleepers and through the MDF top board of the hammerlocks. I then tightened them with larger washers, split washers and of course nuts. Some of the sleepers had bows in them so I had to plane some edges and I was worried about one which bowed at each end a lot, but this straightened down once I tightened the bolts.

Once they were all bolted down I took them with the planer and evened out the different levels between the sleepers (then again they had bolted down really well) and then I planed a bevelled edge along the top edge of the bench. Finally I gave it a good sand with rough grit paper to even everything out.

All I got to do now is get some putty and fill the holes and gaps and sand it down and shes done. Theres something about a good workbench that makes your shed complete. I hope this ones going to be there when my kids (dont have any just yet) start playing in the shed...

Excuse the mess...Its not normally like that...

Looks good Angus. I can think of a certain shed in Kalgoorlie that would be topped right off by a good solid bench like that.

I wouldn't fill the cracks & holes with putty though - just a good generous soaking with a decent oil will finish the job nicely.
    Cheers .........

Magic. I have the same bench units and, until now, I've not entertained the thought of putting anything serious (like a vice) on them.

    Food for thought!

Thats why I added the top. I want to mount my vice and a bench grinder. Its really very solid now.

Exactly - I bought a bench grinder today that The Aussie Bride hasn't seen yet - I think the new benchtop may wait a while here

Nice one Angus! With all that extra room, you may need another project... ;-)

Nah the Rangie is keeping me busy enough at the moment. I have reinstall its fuel tank now...the workbench was just a distraction. I need to get the Rangie on the road again...
