G'day Sparks,

As far as gloves go, we started wearing the Ansell "Hyflex" ones that seem to be better than most for that sort of work. Not really super hard wearing but do take a bit to cut using a knife. I had also taken to cutting the end of the digits out of the pointer and thumbs for a bit more feel (i know the point of wearing gloves is........).

After 30 minutes of stripping a 24pair overall and individual screened dekoron cable ready for a barrier (putty/epoxy) gland, given my hands are not exactly what you'd call "surgeons" it was either that or not wear them at all.

Yeah like i said, don't know about the mobile phone thing. All I understand is that there is a certain amount of Joules required to cause ignition, and that any electrical device that "contains" enough energy to create a spark or can under fault conditions get to a temperature hot enough to cause ignition is a no no, unless risk assessment is undertaken bla bla bla.......

Thanks for the info Mr Knight, happened to be next a very large mobile crane that ran away once from a small but significant gas leak.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. I am now much wiser and educated in the ways of intrinsically safe devices and hazardous areas, not to mention staring down the barrel of $20,000 of extra cost on the job:(

For those I communicated with:

Pushbuttons and indication - Using a EXe rated box from NHP which holds the button and LED. At $500 each they're expensive but the upside is I don't need a barrier for them.

Siren/Beacon - Have found an E2S unit for $700 but I need a barrier.

Temp/RH sensor - Still looking but finding one that has a current IEC Ex or ANZ Ex certification is proving an issue. Vaisala have one for ~$3000:eek: + a 2 channel barrier.

Barriers - Got an "Engineering guide book" from Pepperl + Fuchs which is fantastic; explains the lot. Certification is again an issue but galvanic barriers seem to be plentiful so I should be ok there.

I won't be telling the mob I work for you are getting it put to bed for 20K, I'd never here the end of it! If we did it we'd have spent 20k just doing the engineering!
