    Canoe building

I was wanting to make a canoe but i typed in free plans on internet search & when you read all about the canoes & get to the end you still have to pay.
Does anyone have experience in building one ,i would have to make it out of ply or similar as i dont have a mould for a fibreglass one & it would probably be to expensive for me anyway..
I want to build one big enuff for two adults & sometimes the 2 kids with us, its just to paddle around the lake as we are close to lake macquarie...
does anyone have some plans i could borrow to look at..
Is the material easy to get or do you need a specialist shop..

    Thanx Jason..

Would you be interested in building a fiberglass canoe?? I may have access to one for really cheap with plans and all. My landlord has had one for 6 years but never got around to building it and wants to get rid of it, apparently the fiberglass fumes aren't that great for you.

I could find out some more info and cost if you want?

hahahah your funny it would be great but it would take me a couple of years to rase the funds plus we still have to find a house to rent in our price range..
There was one in the trading post i think it was last week it just needed some repair. It was a 14 foot one it was $300 . I just dont have the funds just yet but thought i would ask on here if someone had done it to get some ideas.

making one out of wood will cost you a grand.

fiberglass over a hand moulded styrofoam shell maybe half that

a canvas one over a collapsable aluminum frame $300 ish

years ago I was in a canoe club and they hired out moulds to people. The arangement was you helped a few others to make their fibre glass canoe or Kayak [I did kayak] so you learnt what to do and how to look after the mould, and then you could hire it to make your own.

I have also seen very cheap second hand canoes at times.

For recreational use a plastic yak or canoe would be better than any other option. You should be able to pick up a 2nd hand one for about the same cost as the materials to build one.

A dinghy made of marine ply would be cheap and easy to make, no way would it cost a grand. On one of those diy shows they made an ugly short unstable looking dinghy for a 2-4hp outboard .

Here we go, video and all - DIY - dinghy - Better Homes and Gardens Magazine - Yahoo!7 Lifestyle

I think it looks ugly and unstable so i'd make it longer.
