I am fairly sure that Haflingers were described as "All Wheel Drive". It may not have been the official description.
I assumed at the time that the label referred to the fact that with difflocks front and back, only one wheel needed traction to keep going. So all of the wheels were capable of driving the vehicle by themselves.
Which is an example of the variable use of the term - according to Wikipedia, the term All Wheel Drive is most often used for "crossover" types such as the Ford Territory.Quote:

Dave - while FWD usually means "four wheel drive" it is also the name of a US truch manufacturer, where it stands for "Four Wheel Drive" - again showing the lack of standardisation of the terminology.

Toyota, Nissan do, so everyone traveling behind then knows, and to make it stand out more they some times have after market mudflaps that have white lettering saying "4WD", just in case the following traffic did see the body badge.:D
Interestingly, no one has mentioned LSD as a form of preventing wheel slip.
The original question was about the term 4X4, I understand that term to mean 4 wheel drive X 4 door.
As in 2X4 means 2 wheel drive X 4 door.
As in 4X2 means 4 wheel drive X 2 door.
But, I have seen some adds by dealers, using these terms incorrectly.
(As I said, thats my understanding of the meaning of 4X4, to be that above, but am willing to bow to superior knowledge).
Ergo, landies, (my D2), even though they are "all wheel drive", they are 4X4's with LSD's; and a centre diff with low range and diff lock, (as distinct from a transfer case).
In addition the Subaru is an all wheel drive, can still call it a 4X4, with LSD's, and the manual Forester had a ratio reduction lever on the manual gearbox versions.
I sold my Forester for the D2, as was the superior tug for a larger van.

Really, they're all One Wheel Drive.
And difflocks all round just means you can go further before you end up with No Wheel Drive.:D

4x4: (Number of wheels) x ( number of wheels driving). 4WD is the most common variant of land rover. AWD simply means all the wheels you have are capable of driving. This is for those who have lost fingers and tend to run out when counting. All terms are capable of being extended by marketing gurus until they have the same relevance as horsepower figures. Look for "Extended Joy Hyperdrive" at a Great Wall dealer near you, soon.
