Ipad & Memory Map

to some pictures of the inside of my dusty car showing the ipdad - in my defence the flash from my camera phone makes it look "dustier" than it rally is.... errrr yeah thats it - its the flash... its not really dusty.. :angel:

I have the VMS in the centre and the ipad on the "navigators" side. The Ipad cover tucks down bewteen the dash and the glass and holds on the bumpiest road. If i need to i can place it in the centre but not sure how good that is on the bumpy stuff.

When not using the Ipad it sits on the left of the drivers seat next to the centre cubby box.

If interested the other stuff is my cruise control and the holder for my iphone (plugs into the alpine car radio with Blue tooth hands free and ipod player)

Dumb question I know but can an iPad 1 or 2 communicate with more than one bluetooth device at once.
Question is could an iPad 1 or 2 send music to a radio with Bluetooth at the same time as being used as an external monitor with map software hooked up to a GPS with Bluetooth

It took a while, but here's some pics. The camera was below the driver's line of sight when I took the photos so the iPad appears to block more of the view than it really does - the actual impact is minimal. The iPhone is mounted next to the A pillar in a TomTom enhanced GPS cradle and serves as a backup in case anything happens to the iPad.

The second photo shows the RAM mount (purchased from Camzilla). Despite being marked as being iPad2 compatible it is really an iPad1 mount so I had to add the 5 white spongy bits of padding to prevent it from slopping about in the holder. The RAM mount is fixed to the windscreen with a very strong suction cap. I have also put some thick double sided tape on the bottom edge of the RAM mount to reduce vibration and to protect the top of the dash from scuffing. Power for the iPad & iPhone is controlled via the "Australia" switch (second from the left in the row of 6 switches) so it operates independently from the ignition. The switch operates a relay which is connected to a cigarette lighter style triple power socket that is mounted inside the dash. The iPad and iPhone each have their own 2.1 amp adaptor.

The only thing I don't like about this set up is that the clock is no longer visible.

A bit off the topic but can you get a reversing camera that you can view via bluetooth on your iphone or ipad?

So you reckon Bit Map is better than Memory Map? Interesting as it is only 11% of the price of Memory Map, so significantly cheaper. I also notice that the screen shot in the iTunes store is of a section of Tasmania.
The reason I am asking is because I have an original iPad 3G model, and I would like to be able to use it for topographic GPS maps etc. So trying to determine what program to run.

I guess the next question then is what maps to run on it?

What software/ adaptors would I need to use a laptop Core 2 duo(yeah I know it's getting a bit long in the tooth - hence being available to use in the car) as my off road GPS. Do I buy a plug in GPS adaptor and software and would Memory Map or BitMap work on a windows based laptop? Thanking you in advance for any advice

Gerald I'm assuming the laptop has bluetooth ? I use one of these (or very similar) sitting on the dash

1:250k maps of Aus can be downloaded from the GeoscienceAustralia site for free - well we've already paid for them :o.
It worked fine over our 8 week 12000km Cape trip (I'm running a $300 10" netbook).

Just watched the vid on the memory map site (so sloowwww) but the vids are very impressive. It appears you can only buy it with maps (which I already have).

Thanks John and Martyn. John, sometimes I need to sit back and have a good, hard look at myself. I opened this thread and up came some pictures of a nice ipad and iphone setup and I'm thinking "wow, someone else has the same sort of setup as John" and then I noticed the background. As Homer would say "D'uoh!" Yes, I'll try to remember to ask you about the Tomtom adaptor. I just saw the price of them in JB hifi was $160 and is now $118. Thanks for the links
And yes Martyn the laptop has bluetooth. I didn't think about one of those cheap $300 jobs but I'll definitely look at the bluetooth adaptor.I just bought myself a new Macbook and the existing 16.4" laptop will become redundant (a bit big though isn't it!!?) As you mentioned Oziexplorer have you been here?? - http://maps.festy.org/ full of maps that I can't yet open. I'm sure plenty of people will find it interesting. Also lots of talk about "shonkymaps".
Martyn, I know you're more into doing long range trips than just 4wdriving but John (RVR110) and I went out with a bunch of others last Sunday and I, at least, had a ball. John also invited me to Hill End at Easter and that also was a blast. I think finding out what these Defenders will do before heading off on a long trip is invaluable experience. And you did 12000kms up to the cape and back?! That must've included some sizeable side trips, did it? I'm gonna go have another look at your trip report which I might add, I remember had some really good photos in it. You should take photos for a living!!
