Firstly, for those who have done it before what windscreen mount did you use? i assume that corrugations and 4wding in general would require a fairly heavy duty windscreen mount and the only one i can think of would be a RAM mount system but these are fairly expensive: has any one found a cheaper/online version that would cope with these conditions? Secondly, is the hema navigator app the 'best way' to go in terms of 4WD navigation apps? ive looked for a few others such as 'mud maps' but would like to hear from those who have done it before.

    Thanks

I would go with Hema or Memory Map I find Mud Map utterly useless and use Hema 99% of the time.

It is worth while buying he 25k topo maps for Hema or Memory Maps

I just posted a a separate post about Mud Map 2

I gotta say, I downloaded memory maps on my phone the other day. not really having planned on using it seriously. I just activated my 10 day trial and downloaded some maps.

and it saved me yesterday. lol well saved me from missing my trip that is. I got late to the meet point for a trip out at brindabella with the land rover club of canberra. I had an outline of what we were gonna do for the day and I based it off there stopping at intervals to look at the memory maps app. Was able to find my way all the way up mt coree with just my phone. lol and to think I've never been to the brindabellas either. I think I'll be buying memory maps for now whilst I save for a hema or something

I have the Hema maps for Memory map and really like them. I don't bother with the ipad for gps anymore, I just use the Galaxy phone. The screen is big enough and there are no battery life issues. I've tried half a dozen ipad car chargers and they are poor at best while the gps is running. That leaves nothing for entertainment at camp of a night. Mounting an ipad is also a pain, I've tried a few but don't like the space they take. I have oziexplorer on the Galaxy as well but never use it. The interface is clunky compared to Memory Map.

Which hema maps did you get? I'm using the 25k topo right now.

I just bought the whole set from the Memory Map store. I do intend to also get the 25k maps but I'm tossing up. I have them for Ozi but find them a bit unreliable and harder to read with dotted lines going everywhere that often don't match up with what you are driving on.

    Hi

Great thread, thanks for all the info.

I have bought memory maps and will gradually purchase more maps, it looks pretty good.

However I miss a lot of the features my old Garmin streetpilot has, so I am thinking of getting a Garmin 3490LMT as well. The cost of the Garmin will be covered if it's proximity alarms save me from one speeding ticket

I have just started using memory map on my iphone. The problem is that the map is totally past its use by date. How and where can I update this map. Also the data readout is good except it does not show speed. There are figures that flash in this box and they seem accurate but they disappear. Any suggestions? Jim

Did a flinders trip last year Ipad and Hema maps with pretty standard Belkin cover. It was in a disco 3 and it sat really well in the top Glove box lid with a strap around the base of the case. The beauty is that it logs your trip!

I am doing much more in 3 weeks time for a 9 week break, so an industrial strength case with a Ram Mount screwed into the same lid . Great for swivelling if no navigator and still sits back on the dash if there is one. The vacuum mount worked well on a test trip but takes up a fair degree of windscreen for hard 4WD Tyre positioning / clearance etc.

Have also fitted an Inawise Tyre pressure management system as I Have the hard to get 19" rims and this sits infront of the sped binnacle.

Just an update guys, received a reply from Ozi Explorer today re availability for Mac's as I have recently purchased IPad mini but unfortunately their answer is " We do not know but it is still a long way off" (Bummer)
was hoping they would have something ready soon, but not to be, so it looks like Memory Map for now! & Ozi on the DVD Player/GPS.
Also found on ebay TPMS system that sends vis Bluetooth to Ipad may even give this a go.
    regards, Martin
