Any other Hema App users on Apple?

I just thought I'd post up because on my sick day - in between coughing a lung up and snotting everywhere I managed to get some cool stuff done with my Hema App. I've been using the app on my phone for years, but it has limitations in that it's a bit small for easy viewing. So before this trip I decided to try the kids cast off iPad MINI. Anyway.. things I managed to achieve...

    1. Exported all the existing marks and tracks off my iPhone to the computer.
    2. Transferred them to the iPad (a little clunky but doable).
    3. Converted an old track and waypoints off my Magellan to .GPX and transferred them up to the iPad and iPhone. (very handy - should prevent us getting lost).

Overall - I'm very happy with the App. Yes there are some limitations but overall it works pretty well, and uses your existing hardware so cheap.

I've had the app for the phone for a few years now and been happy with it. Be better with a bigger iPad but I have used it with a standard hard copy map so I know exactly where I am.

I went with MudMap. Not sure it was the correct decision, but haven't had an opportunity to use the Hema, so maybe I'm wrong. Definitely use the iPad. It gives you so much more 'real estate'. And yes, I always try and have a physical map for orientation. I still prefer physical maps in general, but, as the Army instructors always used to ask; what's the most important thing to know in map reading? Answer, of course, is 'where I am' That's where GPS has become invaluable, as so many things can look the same out there.

Just make sure the iPad Mini has the GPS - does not come with the wifi only model.

Just purchased HEMA 4WD app ($99 one) and went driving on the weekend down a track in a state forest. Not on Hemma maps but did come up in google maps - not impressed.

    All the best

Very true, sadly. Mine has LTE.

Something like this will help. Not cheap though. There are cheaper ones, but mostly they are USB, not much use on an IOS device.

    There is also this: https://www.wired.com/2011/04/airloc...phone-to-ipad/

    EDIT: Forget that.

However, there seem to be some people who think tethering WILL work.

If you click on the layers icon you should at the very least be able to use the 1:250 topo. They have the whole of Aus covered in those.

Would be interested to see if this comes up in your map programs. Warra National Park. Hema maps shows the road up to the start of the National Park - nothing after that. Google maps shows the tracks into the park. Two screen shots.

Interesting Laurie. How old is the road? The 1:250 toppos tend to be ancient.

I've tended to use the app most heavily in areas that are covered by the Hema specialised maps. Perhaps you need something that you can load the 1:100's on? I don't think you can do this on the app.
