Thanks redtail ( and everyone ) ,,, my navman used a suction cup,, lasted a week or so in winter,, about a day in summer, then fell off....
it does/will spend 24/7 in the sun,,,
I'd much rather suction than drill holes,,
It's in my D4, but it could easily be done in pretty much anything else.
My satnav is an old 8" Samsung tablet with OziExplorer. I wanted something easily moved or removed as needed.
This is what I've got ...

A set of RAM Mount gear with a double suction cup on the windscreen. The cradle is an X-mount II, with a long arm, ball joint, and standard arm. This way I can move it about as needed. Sometimes I have a navigator/copilot, sometimes not. I can easily angle it towards me, or put it all the way over the passenger side. Notwithstanding where the airbag is located.
I still get plenty of view space out the important bit - the front. And the dashmat (a Sherwoods see post Dash mat) gives support and protects the dashboard.
You can get this as a package deal from some suppliers. Link is to JA-GPS only because that's who I use - no affiliation.
1 x X-Grip II Tablet Cradle (RAM-HOL-UN8BU)
1 x Double Suction Flat Plate (RAM-B-189BU)
1 x Standard Double Clamp B Size (RAM-B-201U)
1 x 25mm (1") Small Ball and Base (RAM-B-202U)
Then I added the longer double clamp and ball
1 x Long Double Clamp for B Size (RAM-B-201U-C)
1 x Double 25mm (1'') ball set (RAM-B-230U)

Martin,
The X-grips are spring-loaded. They don't have a sliding clamp and screw thingo. Check the RAM specs for the range of sizes they support.
I have a smaller version for my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5:
Phone 1.jpg
It sits comfortably on a single RAM suction cup and long arm.
Yes, occasionally it does land on the floor. I suspect that's because it sits there all day, every day, in the West Aussie sun.
It's the same suction cup as the double mount, and readily replaceable when the plastic/rubber bit goes off. Mind you, that took about two years.
I'm pretty sure you can get a custom fit RAM cradle for most Garmin models. Some include the charger connection, I think.
I like the X-grips because they're so versatile. You just need to be careful how you place them in the grip so you don't activate any buttons or volume controls.
BTW Pedro, I used to drive an old Jeep and I was quite happy to drill a hole in the dash for a RAM diamond mount, screwed in with self tappers, and used that with the tablet in the X-grip II. That baby never fell off!
