GPS navigator used as a speed-limit alert ?

Many moons ago I used to have a GPS that would warn you that you were exceeding the speed limit for that area.
(it was an obscure brand that's long dropped off the map, so to speak, but map updates never loaded, so it was soon inaccurate in that department...)

Question for the cogniscenti, - "Is there currently, a popular / supported brand and model that does this ? - at a sane price?"

    - I'm looking at either that, an ebay "GPS" (which is usually a UBD II driven...) speedo/alarm, or retro-fitting cruise controls to an offspring's car.... he's on the edge of losing his licence for a substantial time...

PO of 'The Lady Sarah', '95 Classic with working air suspension, now bored in a '98 Camry 3 litre Vs that flies... on the hint of petrol odour...

I have a couple of Garminís that have configurable speed alarms. By configurable I mean there is a menu option to enable/disable this feature. Both these units would be at least five years old. No idea of the model numbers.

Also a friend dropped by during the week with a 4WD Mitsubishi Canter with large off road tyres and he uses a newer Garmin as his speedometer rather than recalibrate the factory unit to allow for the larger diameter wheels.

    navman..

to the best of my knowledge all of the XXXlmt range do what you want, I have the 560 and IIRC everything in the 500 and higher range comes with traffic alert and free map updates.

It works surprisingly well except in melbourne peak hour when every road goes to black and the poor things go into a herring sandwich loop trying to get you off of the congested roads.

    The Hema also does this.

"You are over the speed limit", "You are over the speed limit",,, yeah yeah, hows **** off sound,, been told today have we dear,,, I know I have, every time I get in the car.
The only good thing about it, once you've gone over, it shuts up ,but I do think you can program more info into it as well, as in secondary warnings. My old Garmin was the same.
The Hema also has all the camera info for speed, red light and distance in it which is good
I'm guessing you can get updates etc when you need,, I'll find this out very soon as we've just bought a new phone and tablet and want them all to work in conjunction together,, this will prove interesting

In NSW, there is a free app called Speed Adviser that does this. Dunno if other States have something similar. It knows the speed limits in each area and flags when one exceeds it. It is annoying as one can't set the tolerance (at least one couldn't, it may have changed).

There are similar apps also available.

I downloaded the speed adviser app. The first road I used it on has always been posted at 60kph (last 25 years at least) but the app was telling me 70! My garmin nuvi was telling me 60.

I think I will remove the app :-)

Most commercial GPS I have had show your speed in a dedicated box and when you are over the speed limit the background in the speed box changes to red.

Certainly did that on the Igos I had, the Synig I had and now with the 2 Garmin units I have.
