It's weird problems like this that are making me haunt all manner of forums just reading up on some of the difficulties being found before I even bother trying Linux. I have several mates who run differing distros. On one hand they rave about it's superiority, then in the same breath they tell me how they spent all night trying to find the answer to some problem regarding interconnectivity or suchlike.

As a genuine viable user OS it all seems a little "flakey" to me, catering more to those tinkerers who are never happier than when they are problem solving.

But,... I'm willing to learn, if I can find what i want in Linux.

Well, at times I've spent a many late light trying to sort a Windoze problem. Issues can be found with any operating system.

That is exactly my experience with it and why I recommend osx where possible. I still think it's great though and love it for mythbuntu... but the setup pain is dissapearing into the hazy past...

Odd you should mention osx, as I was reading recently that the Mac Os's are just another linux based system. The only practicle diff between Mac and the various linux distro's is that Apple pack all the software up for a commercial release, where as with linux you have to start with the bare bones OS and add what you want.

Having said that. I have moved to ubuntu in the last 4 weeks, and while I did have to aply some brain cells to the task of setting it up, I am very satisfied with the results and the confidence i've gained as a result of the work is well worth it.

    cheers

Yep, that's exactly why I recommend it It is a good..no sensational GUI wrapped around rock solid UNIX and packaged together in a form so that every man can use it without knowing what it is or how it works. Now that is good work and that's why it's worth paying for IMHO.

You've touched on my other point (made elsewhere) that for many people tinkering with computers something they enjoy doing. It is for those people that LINUX and windows exists.

Just to clarify though technically OS X is UNIX and has a different parentage to LINUX. I'll try not to be pedantic though I often call OS X the best linux distribution out there. I'll stop now and get out of this thread without further hi-jacking it..

No, thats cool. I knew it was Unix, or Linux. My point is that if you want OSx u have to by a Mac. This way I have the benefit of the solidity of the OS, and the cheapness of the PC hardware. I fully admit the tinkering is needed, but only in the first instance, after that, just let it run. the fun is in the trying.
