    Logic Gear XL-488

I'm in the market for a GPS for the D2a. Have mucked around with dads Navman S150, but it has no offroad capability.

After MUCH searching & reading, the XL488 looks like a good budget choice (but also considering the Garmin Nuvi 765), but the Logic Gear web site says ...

"And thanks to everyone for your patience - we can definitely say the new maps are almost here ..... When you order, your new map will be sent to you on an SD card. Due to software security updates it is no longer possible to load your new maps onboard ... "

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean that the (old) onboard maps remain, and your new maps are installed on the SD card ... meaning how do I get my Topo' maps on the SD card as well ??

Means you have a redundant set of maps installed that become useless ?? Right ?? ... and your left running ONLY off the SD card from here forward.

That might be the deal killer for the XL488 ... found it for $299 ... the Nuvi 765 is about $500. Price isn't the main concern as I want something that will work on road like the Navman unit but have good offroad Topo' capabilities as well.

    Thanks
    Kev..

    Hi Kev,
I have the XL488 since January. When first released, apparently they had a function where you could connect it via a cable to your PC and upload/download direct to the hard memory of the GPS. They changed it for some reason, probably people deleted the OE operating system and stuffed it all up and tried to claim warranty for their own mistakes.
So now to transfer stuff to the GPS you have to put it on SD card, then transfer using the GPS's internal software.
You can still update and replace maps, and run Ozi CE on it. I have installed Ozi CE but not cracked/bought a license yet. I transferred Ozi to the internal memory from SD.

I am very pleased with my unit for city navigation and will configure Ozi as soon as my LR is registered.

I have the 488 with the old maps and the importer is selling the new version of the maps in a SD card for $ 150.oo or install them for you for a fee.
Logicgear have a block or dissabled the USB port "to avoid people damage the unit"
What we need is one of the members here that have the know how to enable the USB port agin.
Oviously it can be done because the agent can load the new maps for you
I would be interested to know how this matter is resolved
    Cheers

I also have the unit and as Longing4alandy suggested you simply FILE TRANSFER the info from SD card into the NANDFlash internal memory after clicking the APPLICATION icon...this is the same icon you use to tell the unit to read Oziexplorer on SD cards.

Not sure what other use being able to use the cable direct from the computer would have. Might do more than just file transfer though...anybody know???

Not sure if you're aware, but It is possible to install Miohack on the S150 which will allow it to run Oziexplorer etc

Thanks Mark ! Cool. I was leading myself up the proverbial garden path then. As long as the new onroad map/s can be copied into internal memory then I've got nothing to worry about

    I'm a bit new to the GPS thing ... I think I know what I want/need ... that is, until I read & research a bit more ... then the goal posts move ... ... then I read & research a bit more ... and ... and ...

Thanks again for clearing up my misunderstanding !

    More questions to follow !

    Thanks Mark2 !

... Dad is gonna LOVE that when I hack his S150 !!
He's had it for 6 months or so and still hadn't unpacked/used it ... he's 70 and tries to keep up with the technology ...

So, if the Miohack will install on the S150, it should also install on the S200 ?? I think the S150 is OK as a street navigator, but I'd like the FM transmitter feature to play MP3's through the Disco stereo ...

Someone posted a link to the relevant site above which I will follow up ... oh,that was you! Thanks!

Does the XL488 have an FM transitter to play MP3's to the Disco stereo ?? ... and does it work OK ?

    Thanks again!
    Kev..

XL488 doesn't have an FM transmitter but does have bluetooth and if your stereo has an auxilliary input (ipod, MP3 player etc) then that works too. My car stereo died so i listen to music from the one puny speaker in the back of the XL488 :-P
Oh yeah, if your stereo is as ancient as mine and only has a cassette player, those aux to tape converters work :-) (until my stereo died of course)
    Cheers,
    Mark
