    mapping

    Guys,
Having run a Magellan explorist with xtra mapping on a SD card.
I was wondering if anyone has been able to transfer that mapping on to a Garmin unit(I have a 60CSx).
Already have the free mapping for the Garmins(cant think of the name at the moment),but would like to be able to put the Magellan xtra mapping onto the Garmin(better detail when we go 4x4ing).
    Thanks

    ah... Magellan Mapping....

My father has an eXplorist.. and while the device itself is good it's ability to use maps is very very disappointing to say the least.

Basically the only decent maps i've been able to find are the DiscoverAus ones which are not anywhere near as good at the Dept of Lands Topo's or anything and cost a damn packet.

Have a look at Ozi, and the MapSend software from Magellan. There are some other that Thales have for their big end marine / military stuff (same GPS software) but you have to flap around on their half public FTP servers to find it, there are no instructions and its not clear at all how to use it.

I gave up in the end. but this was after a lot of stuffing around and false hope

[edit - sorry didn't read properly.. you want to go the other way around. Ozi is your best bet, but I haven't tired this]

I suggest that you check out things like shonky maps or Trax4Aus - they are two freebie sets of maps that you can load (at your own risk). If you want more detail then look at things like OzTopo or the new garmin countours mapping - not cheap but suits some folk.

    MapSource Mapping by Garmin

    Shonkymaps by Shonkylogic
    Tracks4Australia

There are some garmin models where you can load your own jpg maps (oregon and colorado I think)
