Can anyone advise whether they fitted a LR or holden radiator to there S1. Differences that i can see are hold rad much thinner and hoses particularly top match well with rad. LR rad is deeper (thicker) and top hose will not suit as well. Holden rad has larger diameter hoses, LR smaller.
I have removed the mech fan off my holden 186 and re-instated the front crossmember so even with the holden rad has limited space. do i need a custom made rad to fit. Im leaning towards the LR rad if i can shorten the height so it can sit on top of the front crossmember, cut up the rad support panel (make it less deep) to make fit. On the other hand holden rad would suit better but are wider. suggestions pls
Joe that may be the way to go if the measurements work out OK . I think the reason they cut the front X member to fit the Holden radiator is to reduce the height so the bonnet dose not hit on the radiator & also so the original fan can be used . I would also fir a veritable control so you can adjust when the fan comes on You should not need the fan going while driving & only come on in slow traffic or if getting hot. If it is running constantly it may flatten the battery if you don't have a large enough alternator.

I have bought one of those radiators seems a good product but didn't quiet fit as I expected, I also have what I think is a Land Rover radiator in a modified front panel for a Holden six
will post some pictures for you tommorow. Both use standard belt driven fan
I see you have the chassis cut out for the holden engine, mine has been restored to original chassis crossmember on the front so unable to keep the mechanical fan, also i cannot lower the rad it needs to sit on top of the front crossmember which becomes a height issue fowling on the bonnet or just doesn't look right - the rad sitting higher then the support panel.
thanks for the pics but your application is different to mine. ie - holden engine, with standard front cross member. these rad on ebay seem to high, may need a custom made rad or have someone shorten the original LR rad that i have, not sure which would be cheaper.
NB the ebay rad on yours has been lowered as well which i cannot do as it would fowl against the 186 engine on mine

Hi Guys, just wondering if you managed to resolve this issue? Came across a similar issue as per the attached photos with this non-running Holden engine. I'm sure the bonnet won't close and the electric fan should be on the engine bay side.?
Try and keep plenty of room between radiator and water pump bolts. The engine can flex forward down hills. Some people modify the engine mounts to stop this occuring.
Radiators in many shapes and sizes. Prices are good but current exchange rate not so good. Service is first class. Check quotes for freight. The US Post Office is usually best.
These items are sized for high performance V8's so should cool anything you can fit in a Land Rover.
High capacity Torana radiator works.
I have one in my series 3 88" which has a Holden donk and does not have a modified cross member.
However there is some modification to the radiator support panel to accommodate the radiator.
With regard to switching the thermo fan, there are bucket loads of thermo switches available and the Tridon site is a good place to start looking.
You can select one that suits the temperature range you require, ie say if you have a 77C (170F) thermostat you can find a switch that cuts the fan in a 85C and out at 80C.
There are also switches with two lots of settings in them which offers a bit more flexibility in setting up the system.
Wire them through a relay and also fit an override switch in case you want to bring the fan in early for some reason.
BUT is that radiator sitting on the front crossmember (has to be) holden 6 sits very close as is to the front crossmember so no radiator will slide down behind the crossmember as there is no room, so the radiators have to either sit on top of the crossmember or into it as if they were removed or chopped up. If you get a chance a better pic of the base of radiator in relation to crossmember would be nice to share.
