It certainly looks like a Holden "blue" engine. Nice motors. Does it have electronic ignition?
Hi thought I'd add some more photos. She was changed to the flat deck in 2013, and has spent her life in Otago.
Does this look like the blue 1980 to 1984 Holden engine, Has the 202 on the block.
Thanks.

I'm tipping red motor painted blue. Blue had 2 barrel manifold and carby ,anti pollution trees and sensor top of thermostat housing.
Hi I had a good look at the engine today, the thermostat housings and the alloy plate appears to be added on to the original engine ( visible newer gasket cement) and they are off the red, possibly as a simpler set up than what you mentioned was standard on the blue . The paint on the engine is pretty thin and basically appears to be straight onto the steel, with no signs of red between..... so guess I'll have to dig a bit deeper.
Thanks.

Good call... I found the engine # starting with the prefix QL which puts it as the red 2002 HC ( high compression) came out between 1971 and 1980 on HQ and HZ Holden as well as LX Torana ..
Interesting it ended up blue!!
Ow well....
Graeme.
Holden 202 red and blue motors are very different. The red 202 has "202" cast into the block up to HZ and VB commodore where they changed the casting to "3.3". All the blue motor engine blocks had "3.3" cast into them. The blue motor had a fully counterweighted crank shaft and a 12 port head, among other things. The red 202 and 3.3 blocks had the lighter crank shift and a 9 port head among other things. If your engine block has "202" casting it it is definitely a red engine, built from 1971 through to 1978.
