    What is going on here??

    Hey all,

    I just purchased this new LR and when I turn the key over before starting the engine I can hear the fuel pump, pumping away.

    I have taken a quick vid of it, and was wondering if you could let me know if this is something I should be worried about and how I can sort it out.

    yep!
    standard facet pump.
    The small lump connected on the fuel tank side of the line(ie. fuel in to pump) is an inline filter to stop any rust/debris killing the pump.

    From memory all landrovers used electric pumps back in the day .. very few were fitted with mechanical pumps over the years.

    Should be set to run from the ignition wire(ie. as you said before you start the engine) .. this way it primes a bit to maintain fuel pressure for start up.

    Also looks to be connected via relay .. so it seems you're all good to go.

    Not quite correct. Electric pumps were used on Series 1 1948 - 1958, and six cylinder and V8 models (a small proportion of production) Series 2a and 3 1967-83, but mechanical pumps were used on all four cylinder Landrovers, Series 2,2a,3 1959 - 1983. Also on early 90/110 and including Isuzu engined ones, 1983-1989.

    Peak production of Landrovers was Series 2a and Series 3, 1961-83, the vast majority of which had mechanical fuel pumps!

    Ah! OK.
    My only series experience was my dads 6cyl 2a.
    A few years later I got my '79 RRC which had a similar (ie. electric) pump .. so I assumed it was just a std LR practice to use electric fuel pumps

    While Landrover has had some "standard practices" over the years, they have changed over the years and also depend on which vehicle and system you are talking about. The fuel pump question is one of them, but there are conflicting standard practices.

    For example, Rover was an independent car company from the inception of Landrovers up until 1967, when it merged with Leyland. And a lot of Leyland "standard practices" did not match Rover's ones, although these only very gradually permeated into the part of Rover that became Landrover in 1989. And then more changed with further changes in ownership, one very prominent one being when BMW changed the wheel stud pattern from that which had endured since 1948.
