I have a standard set of 18 inch Discovery 3 rims with the Goodyear Wrangler 255/55/R18 tyres. I want to replace these tyres with some decent off road tyres (BF Goodrich Mud terrains or all terrains or similar).
Any suggestions for quality off road tyre to fit 18 inch rim?
Or should I try and buy some 17 inch rims?
Cheers,
Matt
Do a search in the D3/D4 forum. You'll all the answer (or opinions anyway)

Thanks fellas. Just realised I have posted thread in the wrong section. Should have posted it in Discovery Series 3 not Landy series 3. Sorry. My bad
have you had a look at the coopers LTZ, never had them or heard anything about them, but they may suit your needs?

Matt,
Be careful ordering tyres as the size you have mentioned is a RRSport size.
The D3 normally has 255/60/18.
Cheers.
if you do a search in here you will find lots of threads on this subject with lots of differing opinions.
I have General Grabber AT2's on mine and I am very happy with them, they have been good on road even in the wet albeit with a little extra noise, they have also performed well in loose dirt, sand and mud. At around 10 thousand k they seem to be wearing fine so far.
Some people say they have experienced difficulties with damage to the sidewalls in very rough rocky country, I have not had experience in this type of terrain as yet, but I would suggest that if you are doing a lot of this work it would be worth investigating 17" rims and looking for LT tyres.
I'm sure this may have been done to death by now but.....
Does anyone know if it is legal (QLD) / possible to fit the 285/60/R18 Cooper Zeon LTZ tyres on a 255/60/R18 D3 stock rim? Is there a likelihood of rubbing within the wheel arches with this tyre?
I did see someone in the UK (Disco3.co.uk) with them on and didn't see any apparent problems, but not sure if legal here in Oz.
Not sure how many of you read Overlander 4WD magazine, but finally, someone (Vic Widman and Cooper tyres) has done a feature on these tyres, suitable for larger rims. So far as I know, these tyres have been around for a while, and feedback from US users is certainly very positive. So was the Oz road test.
What irks me is that after so much negativity by the motoring press about Landrover's wheel and tyre choice, (soon to be adopted by others) at long last a review of a suitable rim/tyre combination with a tyre designed specifically with larger rims in mind has been conducted, if somewhat belatedly. Apparently, this issue cost the D4 the 4WD of the year title (at Overlander, but not the more sensible 4x4 Australia!)
Cheers!

I was also thinking of Cooper LTZ's however feedback has swayed me to BFG ATKO's in 265 x 65 x 18.
These are approximately the same diameter as the LTZ's however they are LT rated & I believe more aggressive.
I believe these are too big according to Qld legislation however if the new Code of practice is ever adopted they will be legal.
They will also fit in the spare wheel well although they may have to be deflated to 20lb.
Mud terrains are available in 275 x 65 x 18 however these require a lift to fit & an external spare wheel carrier.
Regards
Chuck
