Not sure if this works for D4....but I did this in a new Mazda. The NRMA dude said the following applies to ALL modern common rail diesels. Turn key to on, leave it there 10 seconds, turn off. Turn key to on, leave 10 secs, turn off. Repeat about 5 times. Try starting it. As described earlier the lift pump should by then have primed the engine.

That was more or less the procedure in the D3 and it worked for me.
I know the process Brad72 mentioned has been successfully used by some overseas.

Understand completely, I wasn't being un-polite or at least that wasn't my intention, how many times have I said this to MYSELF, especially when up to the floor boards trying to figure out the traction control after I'm stuck............. DOH!!!!!
