The 8th seat was something I lost when changing from the Cruiser to the Disco, however, I can now seat 7 full size (198cm) adults on a long trip comfortably.
And I went the other way.
I have a DII V8 4.6 and wanted a new vehicle with diesel power.
I test drive the D3 and D4 2.7L, both very nice and settled on a brand new LC200 when it came to purchase time.
One good thing about the Toyota is 17" wheels. The rest of the vehicle - well, it's my experiment to see just how reliable Toyota's claims really are. I'll report back any issues that I have.
The LandCruiser, as big as it is, is 5 adults + 3 children carrying capacity, whereas the D3/D4 is 7 adults carrying capacity. This was nearly the deal breaker for the Toyota - the 3rd row seats are really quite pathetic. But in the end, I knew that no one vehicle would be perfect.
The Land Rover product seesm far better value for money, and the Toyota is very expensive for what little you get.

I guess that is my point. Not to taking anything away for the 3.0Lt, I am sure it is a sensational engine that would add to the driving experience etc, only down size appears to be use of 19 inch rims and the limitation they bring to trye choice for serious offraod work.
I just thought it worthwhile noting that the 2.7lt is a perfectly fine piece of equipment and does everthing asked of it without fuss or in my mind wanting for anymore power.
We are talking about a 2.5t 4wd so the concept of it behaving and driving like a sports car is fanciful, and for all the go fast bits, where I notice the bulk is stopping. You can certainly feel the momentum when you want to pull up quickly.
Anyway enough back and forth, whilst the 3.0lt is obviously a step forward you can purchase the 2.7lt without fearing you will be underpowered or have purchased an inferior vehicle. It did win just about every award conveivable with the 2.7 lt TDV6 and other than trye choice will probably win them all over agian with the 3.0lt.
Happy decision making.

Hi All,
I've just taken delivery of a D4, 2.7 and am extremely impressed.
I've driven both the 2.7and the 3.0 during test drives only and grant that both machines are exceptional.
What swayed me to the the base model D4 was cost and the ability to use the reduced initial cost to purchase a Diff Locker and Bi Exnon lights and other after market necessities.
Same drive train, same vehicle just a lot less fruit.
Both an excellent choice and what ever you'll be happy which you go.
In the end they's your dollars.
Hmmm, I've yet to see an aftermarket diff-locker for either the D3 or D4.
all I can say is if you want an aftermarket diff lock for your d3 / d4 then we need to keep on asking at our local arb store so they see there is a demand and a business case can be made to support the development $$$.
BTW can you also ask for a sahara bar while you are there![]()
Trobbo, with you on the Sahara bar for the D4. I was at Opposite Lock today. The guy there thinks it will be about mid year.
ARB list the normal bullbar on their website now when in fact the picture is of a D3 ????
Guys, thanks for all the replies - I'm sure I'm going to be wrapped with the 2.7 D4.
Some comments on the D4 3.0 Brakes. Toyota can seem to stop the 200 with smaller brakes - just as heavy and just a powerful... And the 2.7 is just as heavy as the 3.0 and can only travel legally at the same speed????
I just don't get it!
Anyway, I will need to research spending the cash I've saved on the 2.7 to squeeze some more ponies out of it!!!!
Chip or remap anyone???
Hi mickyd, you also get an upgraded transmission. I hear what you are saying about the brakes.......mind you the 3.0Lt does fly!!
Re Extra Power - I have used DP Chips in my Landcruisers with success, however you have to be carefull not to adjust them up too high as it will increase exhaust temperatures. The company that fitted mine adjusted the setting to 7 which I found out later was too high. I ended up with it at 4.
I had an upgrade done on my D3 2.7 at Ritter Landrover in Melbourne. I fealt safer doing this as it was a genuine Landrover upgrade from the UK.
Did make a difference.
Hmmm,
I never said "an aftermarket" diff-locker that is your interpretation of a my poorly worded sentence.
I should have said a factory fitted Electronic Differential.
