18' AT tyres for SE D3 (a good news story for a change!)

    ‘Evening All,

I would like share a very pleasant tyre shopping experience that I’ve just had on the of chance it might save some of the faithful wasting their time getting bounced around by disinterested local tyre sellers.

After talking to about a dozen tyre outlets of various flavours in Melbourne last month, I was amazed by the total lack of interest in getting back to someone that was keen and willing to hand over near on $2k for 5 new AT boots for a SE D3 - a particular favourite was the “call back tomorrow” that I was almost universally promised after they had checked with their suppliers on pricing and availability)

After getting zero interest from local suppliers of GG AT2s, Pirelli ATRs etc apart from “we may be able to get some but you’re probably looking at a week”, I ventured onto the www and checked out Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and was pleasantly surprised to see GG AT2s for $US199 (Pirelli ATRs were a couple of bucks more).

It only took a single e-mail exchange before a sales rep got in touch with me and promptly answered all my questions:
    - Do you ship to Australia?: “yes, we certainly do ship to Australia”
    - How long does it take?: “3 to 5 days”
    - How much is shipping: “$US374”

The sales rep I dealt with at Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels was Mac McNabb and his contact details were as follows:

    Mac McNabb | Sales Specialist
    __________________________________________________ ________

    Tire Rack

    South Bend, IN 46628
    O: 888 428 8355 Ext.739
    O: 574 287 2345 ext. 739
    F: 574 236 7707
    mac@tirerack.com

After a couple of exchanges to verify the international credit card transaction (there was also the option of paying by direct transfer), as they need to call and speak to you at a directory-listed number, I paid my money and sat back and waited. Well, I didn’t need to wait long.....

Sure ‘nough, 5 days (which included a weekend) later, the nice FEDEX man arrived at my door with 5 new tyres – no fuss, and more importantly no duty or GST (as they send them as 5 separate items). Using the tracking numbers supplied I could even check on the (super quick) progress of my new tyres.

So if any of you out there are similarly fed up with the local tyre game, I can heartily recommend Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels!! They have a huge range of tyres in every conceivable size.

I don’t want to sound like their newest local agent, but I cannot speak highly enough of their service as the fact that they delivered exactly what was ordered, on time and on budget is something not often seen in these parts anymore!!

Great post, thanks. I agree, Aussie tyre dealers tend to know very little about their product and even less about customer service.

Got 67,000 KLMS out of my GG AT'2s Did quite a bit of 4x4 with them in the Flinders and Gawler ranges had some chunking but this would have happened to any tyre where I went. Quite on the road despite the tread pattern. Would have put them on again but there wasent any in stock at the time and would have had to wait over 2 months for them. I would highly recomend them.

Glad to hear that you had such a positive experience with Tirerack.

A couple of months ago I approached tirerack but unfortunately got very poor service.
I initially phoned them and was told they could supply me with a shipping quote within 4-5 days. I emailed them the relevant details asking for shipping quotes for several combinations of tyre quantities as I wanted to evaluate splitting them into two shipments to keep under the $1000 import limit and thus avoid paying customs duty and GST. They replied saying it would take 2 weeks to give me a quote.
Although I had asked for a number of combinations I assume that an experienced shipping company would have a base/handling cost plus an amount per tyre so it should not have been too difficult? Anyway I could not wait that long as a local discount offer was due to expire and I needed to make a decision.
So I emailed then again asking for a simple quote for five tyres which I could use as a comparison. Despite emailing them sevreal more times I did not receive any reply by my deadline and still have not.
I think the lesson here is to make contact directly with sales reps who have a proven track record so your experience with Mac McNabb is valuable as sadly all tirerack sales reps are not equally helpful.
I ended up ordering a set locally but am still awaiting delivery

Note the Australian customs website warns they may treat multiple purchases for the same item from the same supplier as a single purchase and charge import duty (10%) and GST on the whole lot including shipping costs. So whilst tirerack may send them as 5 separate items this may not wear with customs here and you could end up with a bill later. If yours was under the AU$1000 excluding shipping you should be OK.

Mac is the man to contact
I emailed him for shipping costs on pirelli atr 255\55\19, reply next day on cost,
I did transfer later that day, next morning tyres had been picked up by FED EX, and should be here within the week
I did do a quick check with Bob Jane ,not in stock and $150 more per tyre, even after delivery to regional Qld , ya gotta wonder.

Hey Raomer, may i ask what did you end up paying for the pirrelli's? I'm looking at replacing the one's on the D3 soon.
Also does anyone know if we can run 245/75/17's on a d3. total rolling diameter of 800mm? Does this size rub on guards etc at normal driving height? I'm looking at getting a set of the BFG km2's , has anyone used them or got any experience with them?
    thanks all
PS good post Ricko. particularily as it's a good time to be buying ex US
