Extended LR roof rails

Hi there,

just asked the same question myself (in the Disco 4 forum) DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Extended roof rails .....or not?

I am still not sure if I go the LR extended rail option or not. Rhino tell me if I get thier 3 bar option (taller one at front to match the height at back), i can get 100kgs up there. Does anyone know if if the LR set up can take 100kgs?
I note that to get 3 cross bars from LR thay are asking me to buy the whole kit twice! :eek: (at $1800 each) which leaves me with :eek:the rails and an extra cross bar (is that BS?)- intrested to know if a thule or other brand is the same at the LR cross bars.

PS - Disco 4 comes of the boat today - 5-7 more days and I have the big beast! OMG OMG - cant wait! spent 6 months containing myself. [biggrin]

they also do a short rail at the front that requires a long legged cross bar.

Seeing as that's my car in the photo :D I can say with authority that the Rhino rail shown has not been drilled or pop-riveted at the back. The installer specifically said that this was where they deviate from the Rhino supplied instructions as it is unnecessary unless you intend to move the racks all the way to the very back, and I probably would appreciate them not doing it. The only difference is around 1mm in height at the very back.

I have the extended roof rails on my D3. I use 3 of the Rhino square bars and a Rhino rack. The rack is about 1.5m long and made from tube and mesh (Rhino calls it a Platform Basket). Unfortunately, Rhino doesn't make a rack about 3-400mm longer in that style. I had toyed with idea of getting fabricator to extend it, but it's OK for now. I chose this one for its low profile and plenty of places to hook things on. One thing to be mindful of is that the rails are tapered and you can't drill the cross bars all the same. Each one needs to be centred and drilled to fit where you want the bar. To fit the bars to the rails I used steel plate and bolts in the channels of the rails with the nuts up.

The real pita was getting it to keep quiet. After moving the whole rack all the way forward and all the way back without success, I ended up fitting a Holden bonnet protector to it and that fixed it.

The Rhino bits take about 15 minutes to fit and remove. I also have a shovel holder and open sky awning fitted to the rack.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos and I've taken all the gear off the roof (except the long rails) because I'm not going anywhere for a couple of months.

I know this is a old post, but with the long rail's do you need 4 cross over bars?

I wouldn't thinks so. I seem to recall the recommended maximum distance between bars is 700mm and given you don't fit the cross bars at the extremes of the rails (front and rear) you should be right with three rails.

Nothing to stop you using all 4 cross bars at the same time!!

Did you find an endless supply or they fall off the back of a truck

I have LR long rails and cross bars as well.
