I have a different experience to what the Service bloke has said.

D4 hooked-up to box trailer with std incandescant indicator, parking & brake lights. The trailer dash light flashes with each blink of the indicators. Park sensors disabled when in reverse gear.

D4 hooked-up to c/van with LED's all 'round. The trailer dash light flashes with on ONLY the FIRST blink of the indicators. Then nothing. Park sensors NOT disabled when in reverse gear. Therefore I assume no Trailer Assist functionality.

Some modification to the twin left LED & twin right LED indicators by replacing one LED on each side with a std incandescant globe.
Now the D4 hooked-up to c/van has the trailer dash light flash on EACH blink of the indicators. Park sensors disabled when in reverse gear. Therefore I assume I now have full Trailer Assist functionality.

The D4 handbook is correctly written IMO.

I have the LED Module (supplied by Linear Electronic Design) fitted to my Pioneer camper and all works as it should - trailer light flashes with each tick of the indicator, reverse sensors cut out, presume Trailer Assist is functioning as it should. These units can be kept as a mobile set-up (rather than bolting it to the trailer / van) so might be worth consideration if using various trailers.

With my D3 the dash light only flashes on the first blink going left, right or hazards. All the lights work, rear sensors turn off etc. Has normal bulbs cause I took the LED's off.

I have the same set up as Jesse B with a D4 2.7ltr towing a KK Karavan. The trailer light indicator always works with the turn indicators.

I have LED rear lights on my caravan and a shunt box between the van and my D4. All works fine. The green dashboard trailer light blinks with either indicator light when connected to the van and the reverse sensors are off. Further when I am reversing the D4/van combo the centre console monitor displays a very large yellow/orange vertical rectangle showing where the D4 is in relation to the van.

    Cheers

    Shunt Box

However, it still needs the shunt (or some form of load) to be able to sense the trailer/caravan and activate trailer stability and cut the rear parking sensors. If your rear sensors are cutting out, then the system is probably working. The trailer icon on the dash seems to vary in reliability from car to car. I had one client's car where it never activated, a couple where it functioned as per the handbook, and mine which only flashes with the LHS indicator. But in all cases the rear sensors are cut-off, and that could only occur if the car sensed the trailer load.

As a further test, with the trailer hooked up, in low range select sand or mud/ruts mode and see if the car automatically raises to off-road height - it shouldn't.

    Cheers,

    Gordon
    Hi Gordon,

So if I want my D4 stability control for towing my Camper Trailer I need to fit a shunt device?

    Paul.
