Buying a D4 - prices reduced?

Yeh thanks, that's useful. I'll always be trepidatious about spending $90,000! Is there a problem with asking these questions? SHould I really go elsewhere without trying to find the facts?

re selling price - the real point is that D4s are selling very well, so no reason to reduce prices ... make hay while the sun shines etc. When I first posted I hadn't realised how well they were selling.

No question about that, which is why I want one! But I do have to keep in mind total life cost which is huge compared to my current income.

I have a strange health problem that precludes me from buying second hand vehicles (truly - hopelessly sensitive to laundry detergent even the amount left in car seats from people's clothes) which is why I've stuck with current vehicles for so long. Also the emotional component of the attraction to the D4 is for the 3 litre engine. But then there's the tyre problem you mention .... (I notice someone actually got the dealer to replace the big brakes with the 2.7 brakes on his SE so he could fit the smaller wheels ... that might be an option (if the local dealer would do it)).

No you should not go elsewhere - ventilating the reliability concerns and expecting mature, informed and objective (as best it can be) responses on this forum - and as many as possible from people with both good and less than top shelf experiences (and that is inevitable) - should be a given.

Yes total cost is huge - it is a big matter and no you are not wayward in attempting to thrash out these issues fully.


Unless you are towing very heavily all the time why not got the 2.7 and hold onto 11 grand or so to pay for accessories (or put it in a fund to pay for after warranty repairs...).

aaardvaark, I agree with Ozscott and get the 2.7 and save yourself a load..You will rarely wish for more power, my 2.7 D4 is definitely more powerfull than my D3. Mine tows over 3 tonne no trouble. I am lucky to have a RRSTDV8 and going from that to the D4 I don't find myself thinking "crikey this (D4) is gutless". Also no probs fitting 17" wheels.

Discojools - I like the sound of that. My D2 is at the limit of comfortable towing with larger tyres and 2 tonn behind it. The fact that the 2.7 is happy at 3tonn is good to hear. I have heard of the 2.7 regularly and easily towing 2.5 tonn vans around Australia - in the D3. Having an extra gear (over my 5 speed manual) and the extra torque would be sweet.

As discussed in other threads more and more tyres are becoming available in 18" and suitable tyres are available in this size now. 18" wheels will fit a 3.0litre and appear often on ebay etc. So an alternative to smaller brakes.

Also, if the power of 3.0 is attractive the 2.7 can be chipped to produce the same power (but a little less torque) however I find the 2.7 quite good as it is - I was thinking of chipping but don't think I will worry - however I haven't towed with it yet.

I haven't looked at ebay for wheels for my D4 as I'm still not sure if changing from 19 to 18 will change that much performance wise. Also the fact that I spend 70 - 80% of the time on road. When I go off-road, it's nothing crazy...beaches, dirt tracks to camp spots etc. However, if I do choose to spread my wings a little I'd hate the D4 to be limited......so I'm open to the feedback.

But, on that point.....I've asked on numerous threads for people to report their inability to do something due to their tyre size. Not as a challange, as a fact finding mission. It's clear that the type of tyre can be a real issue...as in lack of aggressive tread and soft side walls but I haven't read a single.....not one story....that states that "I couldn't do such and such because I'm running 19s" I honestly expected to get inundated with genuine stories, considering how many negative comments there are about large wheels.

Anyway...back to my original question.....if there are often 18s that fit a 3.0L D4 for sale on ebay, why does Gordon (AKA GGHAGGIS) on the 18" Rims for Disco 4 3.0L : Sign up here! seem to be having so many issues sourcing wheels? Why bother to source a supplier if there are heaps around? I guess there would be lots of people that want new ones maybe?

Not doubting your comment at all, but it just doesn't seem to make sense that Gordon tried to get 18s to fit...had a few attempts with ones that were supposed to but didn't....and has had to contract a manufacturer for a solution.

I'd be concerned that these wheels on eBay might not actually fit a 3.0L D4.

On aaardvaark's comment about a dealer retrofitting the 2.7L calipers to a 3.0L car....huge risk if it's true. I wouldn't like the chances of insurance paying up if this had been done and you had an accident. I think the dealer would be taking a massive legal risk too.

Also be careful with the 18" rims as i read here somewhere that if you use such & such tyres,may have been coopers LTZ,the spare wheel will not fit where it should.

Also not all 18" rims will fit D4 3l,possibly not D3 18".

The RRS/D3 18" rims won't fit the D4 3.0 ltr. They will however, fit the 2.7 ltr D4.
