My year 2000 Impreza Turbo was £21,000 brand new in the UK, the exact same car only from Holland was anything from £11-13,000, so you can guess where the money went. Still had the same 3 year warranty and was the same spec, it just took a bit longer to be delivered to the dealership. Having the optional A/C fitted by the dealer in Holland was also cheaper than having it done here.
Subaru UK got absolutely hammered for sales for about 5 years, but they wouldn't reduce their prices. It's not so big a difference now and Subaru UK make it a royal pain in the arse to register the warranty, but it's still doable.
Shipping a Disco from the UK to Oz costs about £1500, a ex-work colleague shipped his D3 out to Melbourne last year. The £1500 was to include all the necessary work / customs / registration once it arrived, so the actual shipping is probably £1000.
