Can you lock in my petrol , food , insurance , electricity, water , medical costs ? ......... I'd like you to do that for me .

...... and ...... When our currency goes down the pan , as has happened several times in the last 28 years , we won't
be getting any price increases because we're locked into "bargain time" Yeah , right .

An insight to some importers that I know . I'm talking firearms , HiFi , guitars & amps . These guys don't hedge against
currency fluctuations because it's too expensive , but mainly bacause they can just up their prices when it happens.
Notice I said up their prices , because reducing their prices goes right against the grain .
Now , those who do hedge : LRA for example ; hold little stock regardless , make such a margin that they're not
that bothered , but if it gets out of hand they up their prices .
I've seen GBPence vs Aussie at anything between 34p and 65.5p in the last twenty years . You should see the increases
that come through in retail price when that happens . Guild X500 went from A$3595 to A$5495 in 6 months in 2001.
This is getting away from the OP's question : yes , we do get gouged and it won't be changing because there's
no EU laws to stop it . Remember the Treaty of Rome, Dr Who ? I made a mint on pharmaceutical grey imports , and no
one could stop us . There's so much margin in Australian imports that it's the envy of Importers of the World.
The Commonwealth Government love it bacause it gives them heaps of tax .

I'm thinking of emailing Land Rover Australia and asking why the huge discrepancy. I have little hope of getting a satisfactory answer, but it would be interesting to see how they justify it.

Also, if more people were to question their pricing policy, surly it would encourage them to review it? or at least provide some no cost optional extras like rear diff lock, sat nav, and rear aircon on 7 seats for example.

They'll just look at your communication and think "****er".
RRS and leasing thereof is their market .
They're not interested in you . Don't waste your time....

Costs per market are, as someone said, what the market will bear.

Think about it, wouldn't you charge the maximum you could if it was your money?

Also, Land Rover are not trying to outsell everyone else. They are trying to outsell their premium competitors, ie sell without dropping a price. They can do that because they've got the best car.

Now for those of you complaining about the price of the vehicle, compare the price of fuel, annual tax, rebates available, depreciation, lease schemes and many others. Fact is that analysing lifecycle cost of vehicles across countries is a complex exercise of which the sticker price is just one component.

    Don't bother email LRA.

Locking in - yes of course currencies can be locked in. At a cost. Whoever does the locking in looks at the chances of a change and offers you stability in return for a premium, as they are carrying the risk. This is also how fixed interest mortgages work, the banks only offer them because they reckon they can make a buck out of it overall when averaged against all their customers.

When the AU strengthens the logical thing to do is add more features to the car not drop the price. The latter sends a signal of discounting, and puts the car into a lower bracket in buyer's minds. Adding more features allows it to better compete at its existing bracket, and there's more gravy that way anyway.

Mike_S you should be able to import your RRS if you've owned it a year plus. It will be, afaik, the only G4 RRS in Australia!!!!

Another point you are forgetting is that in the Uk land rover sells to the dealership and then the dealer ship sells to you

In Aus land rover sell to LRA who sell to the dealership who then sell to you. So one more person who wants their cut

So after the shipping, customs duty, gst on import , luxury tax, aqis cleaning and their cut and the fact that companies that deal with importing stuff normally set an average exchange rate so when the dollar goes up or down they win or lose , sort of swings and roundabout. After all can't reprint all the price list every time the dollar rate moves.
so at the moment they are winning but about a year ago when it was 64c to the us dollar they were losing. Their prices did not shot up then

Not in the industry but if if you look into it GM get export subsidies and tax breaks from the Federal Govt for export vehicles, whereas we have the LCT (wherever that cuts in) and then 10% GST on top of that.

Also the US consumer is much more demanding of cheaper prices, you should hear the merry hell being raised on US based boards as their $ drops and Euro and Japanese goods are becoming dearer.
They just don't get it that they've killed the goose that was laying golden eggs.

So is that why you got so much more kit on the 09 D3 than the 06? The AU$ went up, or was it because they were running them out due to the D4?

I don't know why exactly, but rest assured it had to do with market pressures. LRA, like any business, don't give away what they don't need to.
